  • An old friend Ziggy comes to town.

For all the events of the episode, all I want to talk about in this review is the title - The Pied Piper of Lanford. I don't get it.

Presumably, the title is an allusion to The Grimm Brothers' Pied Piper of Lanford, and the Pied Piper is Ziggy. But I don't get the connection.

    - "Pied" is an archaic term for "motley." But Ziggy was anything except motley.

    - The Pied Piper of Hamelin attracted his victims through charms. But Ziggy lives a loner life, hardly caring whom he attracts.

    - The Pied Piper deals with death, perhaps the plagues of the day. The episode Pied Piper of Hamelin never deals with a death topic.

I get the feeling that the title-writers presented Ziggy as the ultimate free-spirit, and that the pied piper legend has been perverted to be the legend of a similar free spirit.moreless
