  • Best episode in awhile.

    8.5
What is the town of Roswell without stories of UFOs and Alien landings. The trio are led to believe there is real landing very close to the city. The three end up getting the perfect cover in terms of a school father/son camping trip in the nearby woods. The lies and excuse that each of the teenagers use to have a reason to go is unique and even funny. Michael is the one with the most passion to find the fourth alien. River Dog appears again and helps out the trio. Great episode in terms of entertainment. Valenti is close again without finding hard evidence to the aliens.moreless
  • Into the woods they go...

    9.0
I really don't like nature and maybe that's why I didn't really love this episode. Alex and Isabel are cute in this episode as he has his hoped raised and then rapidly crushed by his lady love. The scene where they are looking at the stars together is a really nice moment for the two of them though and the way she shoots him down is very typical of their relationship. Maria lying about the 'dates' for her and Liz to Micheal and Max is pretty funny and when they all end up on the trip together it is nice to see the vindication for their lies.

This episode is really about everyones relationships to their fathers and we see how Kyle is constantly being left out both of the alien drama and his father's life. Micheal is left out because he doesn't have a father and his accusation of River Dog in his quest for Nasedo is touching.moreless

  • If you go down to the woods today you're in for a big surprise...

    8.4
...no it's not the teddy bears having their picnic, it's every young person from Roswell sharing the pain of not only camping in a forest, but having to do so with their fathers.

Something's going on - there are several reported sightings of UFO activity near to Roswell and Max, Isabel and Michael know they have to find out whether it's something real to them or not. The perfect cover comes in the guise of a father/offspring communion in the woods.

This is kind of a contrived episode but with lots of good stuff. I would have thought that if there was a sighting, given Roswell's reputation for government cover-ups, that nobody would be able to get even within 3 miles of the site, and that the actual site would be crawling with people.

The orbs make an entrance here, and Michael as usual manages to be in the wrong again for the right reasons.

It's not quite clear either whether Michael has developed healing powers, or whether because it's a broken bone he can manipulate it like he does other stuff.

A reasonable episode - and Maria's aqua bra is a highlight, especially when in the woods it's turned into an ice bra!moreless
  • Roswell keeps on progressing slowly but do so in a very entertaing way.

    8.4
There has been sightings in the woods near Roswell and the gang decides to go camping there with their dad as an opportunity to enter the area without alerting the authorities and investigate these sightings.

Max and Iz's dad is no back but with a different face. Seriously, for some reason they had to recast the father and now here he is.

This episode is very entertaining, the Liz/Max scenes as well as the Alex/Iz scenes have their moments. Liz's father investigating her was... well pathetic and I'm not sure this had a purpose at all. Oh yeah right, he realizes his baby girl is a woman now. Big deal, I want to know where Max is from and this theme with Liz is approached again a few episodes later with her mother.

    Anyways, interesting episode.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (10)

    • When Max, Isabel and Michael are waving their hands over the glowing symbol on the ground, the top-down camera angle shows River Dog kneeling beside them, but River Dog doesn't kneel down until a few seconds after that.

    • When Max and Isabel run into Liz in the woods, Maria can be seen in the background for a moment, behind Isabel. Max is standing where he should have been able to easily see her, but doesn't take notice of her until she walks closer to the group a bit later.

    • TRIVIA: This seems to be the only time Michael has the power to heal - with the exception of his brief stint as king in season 3.

    • As River Dog approaches Michael in the trailer park, he puts his hand on the trunk of the car next to him. In the closeup immediately following, his arms are at his sides.

    • In the trailer park, when Michael sees River Dog he is outside his home and standing next to a table. As he walks toward River Dog, he passes a brightly colored car. In the shot as he reaches River Dog, he's approaching from a completely random location between trailers, nowhere near the entrance to his home or the car. No time has elapsed; River Dog is still in the same place relative to his surroundings.

    • As Liz and Maria conduct their monetary negotiation, at the end Maria raises her left hand and says, "You're good." Cut to a different angle and her right hand is raised.

    • While Alex is worrying over his date with Isabel at the Crashdown bar, he moves his hands to cover his face. Shots over his shoulder and on his face show different hands raised and lowered several times.

    • After Kyle finishes his story at the campfire, he skips from looking directly at the fire to looking over his shoulder at his father.

    • When Max, Isabel, Liz and Maria meet up in the woods after they left the camp site to go to the crash site Max and Isabel walk off and leave Liz and Maria on their own. Max walks past a tree but when Liz and Maria catch up Max is standing next to the same tree waiting for them.

    • It seems extremely odd that Liz would go camping in the dead of winter if she's getting so sick she's pounding echinacea all day long? Even if she's so desperate to bond with her dad or investigate alien phenomena, no one even mentions it.

  • QUOTES (9)

    • Maria: Come on, I love your dad. You love your dad.
Liz: Yes, I do, I love him, but, like, in the normal father role. Which is like five minutes at a time just a few times a day. Not for an entire weekend with no TV.
Maria: Yeah. I've always found fathers grossly overrated myself.
Liz: And you know what? He has been getting so nosy lately. It's like he wants to know like every single detail of my life. He even asked me about Max and Michael and Isabel.
Maria: Mmm. No. That's why me and my mom have the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

    • Isabel (about the camping trip): Mosquitoes, pit toilets, and animal droppings, yes!

    • Liz: This is an aqua bra. Would you like to try it on, Alex?
Alex (in a sarcastic tone): Yeah, maybe later.

    • Maria (to Liz): It's an aqua bra, y'know all the fun of implants except for the invasive surgery part!

    • Milton: Where's Max Evans?
Maria: I thought he worked for you, dude.
Milton (points to Liz): You! You're Max's girlfriend, right?
      Jeff: She is?
      Liz: N-no. Not really.
Milton: I have to find him.
      Liz: Why? What's going on?
Milton: Just everything we've been waiting our entire lives for. (pause) There's been a sighting.

    • Isabel: Ok, now look a little to your left... and a little further out, that small group of stars right there, that's the Cygnus constellation. It's the furthest we can see from here.
      Alex: It's amazing.
      Isabel: What is?
Alex: Staring at the stars with you. I mean, I used to look up there, and stars were just stars. One was just as good as the next one. Somehow with you... I mean... It's so wondrous, you know? I mean... each star is... is a mystery, you know, and so full of possibility. This is so much better than seeing a movie.
      Isabel: Thanks.

    • Maria: Ixnay on the ining-pay, remember?
Liz: No, I am not pining. I'm just... I am just curious, that's all. I hate not knowing what's going on with Max.

    • Liz: Um, your paranoid schizophrenia, it's...it's kicking in.
Alex: Right. I'm gonna go to the bathroom and go have a little talk with myself.
      Liz: Okay.
Maria: See what I'm saying? These Czechoslovakians have way too weird of an effect on us. If you don't stay away from them, Liz, I'm gonna be picking up the pieces of your heart for the rest of your life.
Liz: No, you're not, because I am staying away from him, Maria. Max and I haven't even talked to each other for days.
      Maria: Really?
      Liz: Yes.
Maria: Then why has he been staring at you since he came in?
Liz: He has? (turns around and sees Max staring at her and smiles)
Maria: Am I gonna have to do an intervention with you?

    • Maria: Liz, this day is the first day of the rest of our lives.
Liz: Spending time with your mother again?

    • Title: Into the Woods

This is a reference to the Stephen Sondheim musicial of the same name, based around the stories of several well known fairy tales, such as "Cinderella" and "Jack and the Beanstalk". It's in two halves and shows what happens after "happily ever after".
