  • A change of pace that's less a great "Route 66" episode and more just a funny and well-crafted bit of television.

Tod and Buz are assigned as convention facilitators just as things get interesting at a hotel outside of Chicago.

Season 3 tends to show a broadening of the "Route 66" scope, with lots of topics lighter in fare and content. So while I can't say that this is great as an installment in the series, it is really clever, funny and enjoyable. The two sub stories are interwoven with a deft hand, a convention of executive secretaries and a meeting between Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., and Peter Lorre to plan the future of horror movies. The script gets it just right, as Tod comes up with a perfect solution: test horror ideas on the visiting secretaries.

There are lots of nice "in-jokes" between the guest stars, a great scene shows women fainting both at the sight of Chaney in "wolfman" make-up AND in just seeing Lorre as he normally looks. Some drawbacks include an over-broad writing of the secretaries, way too many lines about "catching husbands" and "serving the boss" - even for this time in history. Jeannine Riley is also a bit zombie-ish in her performance, the editing takes away a few pieces that would be good to know about her motivation.

I would recommend this episode to any fan of old television or movies. By being less of a typical story, it may appeal to more people today.
