This interesting episode has Rumpole going to Africa to defend a former pupil accused of murdering a bishop. His welcome at the airport is less than cordial but Rumpole survives. He expects to find his client in shackles but instead is doing quite well thanks to a few "friends". Rumpole also learns that there will be no jury in this case. To sort of compensate, some of the defendant's friends tell Rumpole they will "provide" an alibi for him but Rumpole will have none of it. The case seems hopeless until a surprise witness comes forth (much to the defendant's dismay) with a truthful alibi.moreless

Away, for we are ready to a man!
Our camels sniff the evening and are glad.
Lead on, O Master of the Caravan:
Lead on the Merchant-Princes of Bagdad.
We are the Pilgrims, master; we shall go
Always a little further: it may be
Beyond the last blue mountain barred with snow,
Across that angry or that glimmering sea...
