  • Rumpole defends a politician accused of rape while at the same time defending his favorite clerk from a charge of stealing. He is also defending himself from his soon to be daughter-in-law, who is not happy with Rumpole's treatment of the supposed rape vimoreless

This is a fine example of how good the early episodes are. There are lots of different things going on while Rumpole tries to concentrate on his case.

For one, he is defending a politician from a rape charge (he says it was consensual) while getting into near argument's with his son's fiancé. With all of this going on he finds out that Albert, his favorite clerk, has been accused by Erskine-Brown of stealing money from the cash box. All of this showcases Rumpole's mastery of doing the one thing eh loves most - defending. It also shows how much of a calm and cool individual he is as he shows almost no emotion when faced with sharp attacks from judges and co-workers. This, like many episodes before and after show how much Mr. Leo McKern IS Horace Rumpole and why he and the rest of the cast are commended for giving everything they have to making this an excellent series. This is another highly recommended episode.
