  • You know what they say, money talks. All mine ever says is goodbye.

In this story, with more twists than a pretzel so I won't go into all of them, Rumpole finds himself dealing with some old debts thanks to the manager of the bank where he keeps his finances. Rumpole starts trying to track down one client who owes him money from 1972. Meanwhile he is defending a man accused of running a fradulant mobile home business who points the finger at his brother who is the same man that owes Rumpole (and apparently several others) money but he cannot be found. Rumpole puts a P.I. on the case but it takes time and the only way Rumpole can get an ajournment is to fake a stroke. This has everyone believing he is dead including the firm whose client owes him money and they pay up. Then they are suponeaed to appear in the trial Rumpole was working on and as they are restarting the trial, in walks (guess who) Rumpole.moreless
  • Rumpole defends a man accused of selling non-existent houses while fending off the bank, the phone company, and Hilda while he searches for a solicitor who owes him a considerable amount of money.moreless

Of all the episodes I believe this one is the best of the series. While Rumpole defends a man from selling non-existent homes he is looking for a Perivale Bylthe; who owes him a considerable fee from a case stretching back ten years. He also needs Mr. Blythe as a witness in his case when he discovers that his client was also using Mr. Blythe as his legal counsel. Somehow the actors must have known this was to be the last episode for some time because everyone's acting is top notch. This story will keep you glued to your set from beginning to end. If you have never watched Rumpole of the Bailey before this episode is the perfect introduction.moreless
