How many episodes were their released in Japan? Also on the last episode was it meant to be the last episode or was it just canceled like Outlaw Star?

In Japan, 95 episodes were aired. While the Rurouni Kenshin manga progressed the story further, the anime stopped at 95 episodes due to a steep drop in popularity.

Hope this answers your question ^_^!

Although this thread is over 2 months old ill still answer... There were 96 episodes released, one of which was released exclusively on DVD. It was canceled because of the over use of fillers people just became uninterested with it and stopped watching. Due to drop of its popularity it was cancelled, would recommend reading the manga, has a total different ending.

Wooow, I like some of Rurouni's fillers. Prince Yahiko, Kaoru Ecstatic and among others are great too.

Too bad Rurouni manga are not sold here. Duh, later later I'll try finding them in web.
