I would say either Saito or Shishio because they didn't get to kill Kenshin.

I felt that Kenshin was the most tragic character, being torn between his two sides, so to speak.

I think Kenshin is the most tragic in a sense, that is. He was tragic because he can't forget the past anf only got to heal his self [and scar] on the very moment he died. oh and speaking of which, he is tragic as far as the movie Samurai X:Reflections (here we go again.hehe) is concerned.

ide say yutaro he was a promising student when he was taking lessons with kaoru then he is betrayed by the person he called master and friend and gets his arm messed up making it impossible to study kenjutsu any more and on top of that he leaves japan permanetly.  not the greatest life in the kenshin story.

From what I've seen so far, Enishi is the most tragic character in the series, IMO.

Actually, he did.  Read Yahiko no Sakabato; it makes several references to Yutaro being back in Japan.

i say it's saiyo. as a consequence, sanosuke is the next most tragic. their love story was so...so...so... i couldn't explain in words.
