Searching for clues to the family secret, Sabrina calls up Aunt Dorma, the "black sheep" of the family, accidentally waking her out her usual ten-year nap. Dorma retaliates with a household of magic poppies fatal to Spellmans. While Hilda and Zelda are sound asleep from the house full of poppies, Sabrina must keep an unknowing Valerie, Harvey and Libby (the new "brain buster" team) in the kitchen. Additionally, Sabrina herself must fight the urge to fall asleep! Finally, Sabrina conjures up some snow to rid the Spellman home of the poppies... Unfortunately, she stays up all night and is quite tired during the Brain Buster's tournament (a high school quiz show).moreless

    While trying to discover more clues to the family secret, Sabrina wakes a relative, Aunt Dorma, the "black sheep" of the family. This makes her really mad, because she was taking her 10 year nap. In revenge, Aunt Dorma fills the Spellmans house with poppies, which are lethal to them, making the Spellman witches fall asleep. Hilda and Zelda fall asleep instantaneously, but Sabrina, as she is half mortal, doesn't. To complicate things, Valerie, Harvey and Libby come to Sabrina's house to study for a brain buster at their high school. Hazmat suits are suits which provide protection from hazardous material or substances. They contain breathing apparatus and are often used by firefighters.

    • Mr. Kraft: ...and your accomplice, Valerie "Sweeney Todd" Birkhead. This is a reference to the musical Sweeney Todd, where the title character is a barber who kills his clients, while his accomplice sells their meat for her pies.

    • Sabrina: Something tells me this is not the beginning of a beautiful friendship. This is a reference to the final line of Casablanca, "Louie, I think that this could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

    • The title, "The Big Sleep", alludes to The Wizard of Oz. In this movie, poppies mysteriously make some drowsy, which happens in this episode to Hilda, Zelda and Sabrina.

    • The Big Sleep is also the title of a novel by Raymond Chandler.

    • Salem: Oh Sabrina, do you know what you could do for me? Order this water-balloon catapult from Abercrombie and Witch. This is a play on words of the well known clothing label "Abercrombie and Fitch".

    • Salem: You're a regular Mad Max aren't you? Mad Max is a movie starring Mel Gibson about a police pursuit driver, who is drawn into a path of vengeance after a motorcycle gang kills his family.
