  • To the people who found this episode boring: I'm sorry that happened. But try reading the manga.

Personally, this is one of the many examples of the Saiyuki manga being way better than the anime. So forgive me for rating it a ten; the manga version of this episode WAS worth a ten. You have Goku begging Sanzo for meat buns, but getting the cold shoulders insetad. Sanzo, unforntuantely, ends up getting teased by Gojyo for being a good mother.

Well, then a evil shikagami appears and threatens everyone. But right before everyone could get started, a white kitty comes up and a little girl defeats it in one punch. She introduces herself as 'Lirin' and demands to fight them. Then, the group gets into a fight as of no one wants to fight Lirin.

Go read the manga: It's hillarious. ^^moreless
  • Snorrrring. I tried. I tried four times, but I keep falling asleep!

In this episode, the gang presses onward in the quest, and encounter a bunch of demons. We get to see the bad guy Kougaiji talk about revising his parents and making a deal with the main bad gal. There's also a union of the bad guy team of about four people to go after the four good guys.

Combat isn't really the driving force of this action anime, and I should have realized that when the monsters just sort of dissipate after some strong move by the protagonists. Then there's a big monster of the week, and that is hardly a match for the gang either. The few Goku food jokes registered a brief laugh. I get the feeling it's just a filler episode after the somewhat moving Genjo Sanzo story in the previous two episodes.

What was kinda cool was that you have voice actors Vic and Kaytha having a discussion and it reminds me a lot of the Generator Gawl series, which they also star in. Kay just has that evil woman voice down pact.

Overall a run-of-the-mill let's move along episode that took me four times to watch through without falling asleep.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • In the manga, there was originally a joke about Goku and Lirian calling Sanzo 'baldy'. This probably had something to do with the fact Buddist priest/monks were often stereotyped as being bald.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Gojyo: (points at Lirin) Goku, you fight her! You're the closest in size!
Goku: But Hakkai's better with children!
Hakkai: But Gojyo's better with women!
      Gojyo: That's not a woman!

    • Goku: (points at meat buns) Sanzo, I want thoes!
      Sanzo: No.
Goku: Meanie! (cries into Hakkai's shirt)
Hakkai: Aww... what's wrong with getting him a meat bun?
Sanzo: Spoiled children develop bad habits.
Gojyo: Spoken like a good mother.

    • Lirin: (Glares at Sanzo) Let me go!
Sanzo: (hold up pork bun) Want one?
      Lirin: Sure!

    • Lirin: Alright, who wants a piece of me?!
The Sanzo party stare, blank faced.
Gojyo: Ah...I'm not really up for this guys...why don't you take her.
Hakkai: Maybe we could just ignore her....?

    • Kougaiji (after using a powerful attack on Goku): Nailed him.
      Goku: Not quite, pixie!

  • NOTES (2)

    • In Japanese mythology, Shikigami are spirits summoned to serve or protect an Onmyoji, much like the western concept of a wizard's familiar. Shikigami can take the forms of birds or other small animals. Powerful Shikigami can even take possession of a person. The range of abilities possessed by a Shikigami is dependant on the Onmyoji's capabilities.

    • The airdate for this episode is the Japanese airdate. Saiyuki does not air on American TV, except for on ADV's the Anime Network (TAN).
