"I'm gonna build a spaceship, go to the moon, salvage all the junk that's up there, bring it back and sell it."

So he put together a team. An ex-astronaut...a fuel expert...they built a rocketship...

In Summary this was a good show for its time. Not over the top esxciting nor throw it in the wastecan bad. Just a good, averadge show that may have inspired other shows, I'm thinking particularly of "the astronaut farmer" just recently releasedmoreless

The episode I have in mind to review of course has to be the pilot episode. The Junk dealer, using his powers of whealing and dealing. The washed out astronaut with his own off the wall theories of space travel. The fuel expert who not only looks good in jeans but plays with high explosives as well! How could you NOT love this show. Granted some of the episodes were tacky, some were even downright bad. But each of them ahd a camaderie of characters that is sadly lacking these days. Remember this was all shot 'pre-cgi' and they had to make do with whatever they could create themselves. so I think that 'Salvage one' while averadge still stands out as one of my favorites...A man with his own spaceship. What's not to Love?moreless

Innovative but unrefined sci-fi show from the 70s. Salvage 1 is a show that might have been great in the right hands.

From one of the producers of Star Trek the next generation came this sci-fi show about a junk man who builds a spaceship in his own back yard and flies to the moon (the pilot was remake -unofficially- as "the Astronaut Farmer"). Unfortunately, this was only the pilot. When they turned this into a TV series they didn't seem to know where to go with it. The plots were all over the place. It was clearly a case where they had no systematic way of steering the show in the right path. One episode would feature a runaway robot while the next would involve the protagonists buying race horses or saving the enviornment. There was simply no consistency. The space ship was always sitting the junk yard but rarely used after the pilot. This was a show that could have been so good, but was so inconsistent. At only a dozen episodes, it is worth a look if you ever get a chance to see it, and it features Andy Griffith in the lead role, so give it try, but don't get your hopes up.moreless

Andy Griffith and his motley crew build a spaceship out of a cement mixer. Uh yeah, right. It was a decent kids show but the whole idea of surving a trip to the Moon inside a rocket with a space capsule made from an old cement mixer was ultra ridiculous. Then to top it off they had some kind of miracle fuel that allowed them to get there on 1 tank fuel while NASA required a multistage enormous Saturn V rocket. Then the government apparently had no problem with them flying this thing around the world for 16 episodes? And if it was so easy to get to the Moon, NASA -not to mention every other country- would have copied it and a new space age would have dawned.

Ok, it was ridiculous but I was a kid back then.moreless
