  • Innovative but unrefined sci-fi show from the 70s. Salvage 1 is a show that might have been great in the right hands.

From one of the producers of Star Trek the next generation came this sci-fi show about a junk man who builds a spaceship in his own back yard and flies to the moon (the pilot was remake -unofficially- as "the Astronaut Farmer"). Unfortunately, this was only the pilot. When they turned this into a TV series they didn't seem to know where to go with it. The plots were all over the place. It was clearly a case where they had no systematic way of steering the show in the right path. One episode would feature a runaway robot while the next would involve the protagonists buying race horses or saving the enviornment. There was simply no consistency. The space ship was always sitting the junk yard but rarely used after the pilot. This was a show that could have been so good, but was so inconsistent. At only a dozen episodes, it is worth a look if you ever get a chance to see it, and it features Andy Griffith in the lead role, so give it try, but don't get your hopes up.
