As you might know, mid-way through the third season, Redd Foxx lefted the series, and they focused on Grady. So comes this question, which one is better running the junkyard/show; Fred/Redd Foxx, or Grady/Whitman Mayo? Fred was better.

Recently Nick at Nite or TV Land has been playing the "Grady episodes". I had caught them once, but never understood when and why it happened. I assumed Foxx left for some reason or another, but I never found out why, or what part of the series it was during. I have really started to like Grady as the main player. Redd Foxx has some priceless episodes of course, as well, but sometimes I really don't find some of his catch phrases all that funny, and even more so, sometimes they take away from the comedy completely. I like the show in either case, but Grady is growing on me. How about you?

Redd Foxx left the series in the middle of season 3 , because he had a contract dispute with the producers & NBC. He came back in the fourth episode of season 4.

Ill say it like this. Fred is the Man of that show. Grady played the role well. But it lacked something else. If there may of been someone else filling Freds shoes I think it may of got Grady more episodes down the road.

Surely you jest, "ain't no bout a doubt" it as we used to say back in the day, Fred by a landslide. That said Grady was a funny man but he couldn't hold a candle to Fred in the series nor in the real world. Grady Tate was played by Whitman Mayo who invested his salary from Sanford & Son very wisely in real estate and other business ventures and became extremly wealthy.

The Redd Foxx episodes were better, but my favorite S&S episode is a Grady one. Lamont tricks Grady into leaving the house so he can have a party, but Grady figures it out and invites Aunt Esther's bible study over. When she turns on the lights and finds Lamont and Rollo making out with their dates, her reaction is priceless. And Rollo looks like he crapped his pants.

BTW Esther is used better in the Grady eps. As the show progressed, her interactions with Fred became more one-sided with him getting the good lines (maybe the writers were afraid LaWanda Page was stealing too many scenes from Redd). With Grady, though, she was allowed to be much funnier.

Fred was the show. It was not as funny with Grady but Grady did a better job of running the Junkyard.
