  • Another great episode that revolves around the common fear of the dentist and the extremes one man (Fred) will go through to avoid going.

Lamont starts off the show and gets off some pretty good jokes in this one. To avoid going to the dentist, Fred has decided to try an unusual treatment from his pal Bubba--a south central version of an asafoetida bag. Believe it or not this thing actually exists. Only thing that bothered me in this scene was Bubba telling Fred he got a lot of ugliness in his mouth especially since his grill is still completely wrecked. After the asafetida bag fails, Fred brings in a hypnotist with a drinking problem. His hypnosis does not work too well on Fred, but it worked wonders on Lamont. One of the scenes that was later edited out on TV was a hilarious scene where Lamont make a Fred drink a glass of ice water to prove that his tooth was alright. The next scene shifts to the dentist office where Fred really shines. Toothache or not, Fred is always on the prowl as he attempts to hit on the receptionist. As usual Lamont is running interference. I guess it would be embarrassing having your father hit on a pretty girl or worse having him actually pick her up. The highlight of this episode is when Fred gives his “white dentist please” speech which gets a ten second applause. This is what I like about these earlier episodes; a lot of politics and history are covered. On a side note for all the older viewers, the black dentist was played by Sid McCoy, longtime announcer on “Soul Train”. Eventually Fred allows the brother dentist to do his job, but not without swallowing a lot of pride.moreless
