      • (Grady has just told Esther she cannot have her Bible meeting at the Sanford home)
Esther: That's what happens when you replace a fool with a fool.
Grady: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.
Esther: Well I'll get some sticks and stones and I'll break your bones and the name that'll hurt you will be Esther.
Grady: Now I don't like to strike a woman but if I'm forced to defend myself I will, and let the chips fall where they may.
Esther: And some of those chips may cross your lips sucker! Come on! (starts swinging her purse)

      • Grady: Fred put me in charge, and one of the things he said was, "Be sure and fix Lamont lunch whatever you do. He's my one and only son, so be sure and fix him lunch."
Lamont: Did Pop really say that?
Grady: Well, actually, what he said was, "Fix the dummy his lunch, or he'll get mad."

      • Grady: Well, I hope you'll like it.
Lamont: I'll love it. What is it?
Grady: It's, uh, codfish cakes and okra.
Lamont: Well, it smells delicious, Grady, but um, I'm not hungry right now. I'll eat it later.

      • Esther: Is Fred still in St. Louis?
Grady: Yeah, Fred's still in St. Louis.
Esther: Good. I'll say a prayer for the state of Missouri.
