Sarge featured veteran character actor George Kennedy as Father Samuel Patrick Cavanaugh, a former San Diego cop turned parish priest who dabbles in detective work. A police detective sergeant for nine years, Cavanaugh quits the force and becomes a priest after his wife is murdered.
Sallie Shockley played Valerie, Sarge's young live in housekeeper. Harold Sakata (Oddjob from Goldfinger) played Sarge's cook. Ramon Bieri played Chief of Detectives Barney Verick.
Directors included John Badham and Richard Donner. Sarge was produced by David Levinson, who won an Emmy the previous season for The Senator. Writers included Joel Oliansky (The Law) and Edward De Blasio (Dynasty).
Sarge was on NBC Tuesday nights at 8:30 in 1971, right after Ironside but had brutal competition from Hawaii Five-O and the ABC Movie Of The Week.
