In The Continental sketch, when the unseen visitor is in the bathroom, you can see partially through the mirror that it's the cameraman in a dress.
Bruce Dickinson: (stepping out of the booth) That was gonna be a great track. Guys, what's the deal?
Eric: Are you sure that was sounding okay?
Bruce Dickinson: I'll be honest.. fellas, it was sounding great. But.. I could've used a little more cowbell. So.. let's take it again.. and Gene.
Gene Frenkle: Can I just say one thing? I'm standing here, staring at Bruce Dickinson! And if Bruce Dickinson wants more cowbell, we should probably give him more cowbell! And, Bobby, you are right - I am being selfish. But the last time I checked, we don't have a lot of songs that feature the cowbell.
Bruce Dickinson: I gotta have more cowbell, baby!
Gene Frenkle: I'll be doing myself a disservice, and everybody in this band, if I don't perform the hell out of this.
Bruce Dickinson: Guess what? I got a fever! And the only prescription.. is more cowbell!
Gene Frenkle would be resurrected when Will Ferrell hosted SNL in 2005. He played the cowbell during the Queens of the Stone Age song "Little Sister."
Sketches not shown in the syndicated version: Jenny Jones, Mr. Leonard and The Census Taker, Christina Aguilera's dual performance ("At Last" and "What A Girl Wants"), and Sally O'Malley At The Beauty Pageant.
Dress rehearsal sketches shown on the "Best of Christopher Walken" DVD is a fake ad for a movie about Fonzie (from Happy Days) in which Walken plays the title character (Fonzie), David Caruso (Will Ferrell) plays Potsie, and Al Pacino (Chris Kattan) plays Ralph Malph; and Walken as an unusual angel trying to comfort a hospital patient (Ana Gasteyer).
Christina Aguilera becomes the third former MMC mouseketeer to be a musical guest, following Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez of 'N SYNC.
Ironically, four years later she would also be the third former MMC Mouseketeer to host the show, after Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.
Gene WAS NOT a member of Blue Oyster Cult. It was a made up name. Eric Bloom played the cowbell on the song. Also, Bruce Dickinson was not the producer - that was a Sony Employee.
Chris Parnell is the only person to not break character during the "Cowbell" sketch. Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, and Horatio Sanz lose it completely, Chris Kattan smirks, and Christopher Walken laughs while he's in the control booth.
This episode won an Emmy for Outstanding Costumes in a Variety series.
At the end of the Blue Oyster Cult cowbell sketch, the screen freezes to read the words: "In Memoriam: Gene Frenkle, 1950-2000". Gene Frenkle was a member of Blue Oyster Cult.
A sketch entitled "Raspberry Soda and Porno Magazines" was supposed to air in this episode, but ended up getting cut after dress rehearsal. A redone version of this sketch can be seen in the Tobey Maguire/Sisqo episode.
