Ellen DeGeneres is the first cast member from the show Ellen to host SNL.
Sketches not shown in the 60-minute edit: "Kitty Singleton, Federal Agent," "Christmas Stepmother," "A Hard Day's Mango," "My Big Thick Novel," and No Doubt's performance of "Hella Good." This episode adds "Season's Greetings from Saturday Night Live" from Derek Jeter/Bubba Sparxxx & Shakira.
Many people became confused after hearing Chris Parnell's voiceover as Tom Brokaw during the "Narrator That Ruined Christmas" cartoon. Robert Smigel vehemently opposed Parnell's firing, so he wrote Parnell into the cartoon to make a statement that Parnell shouldn't have been fired. Apparently it worked, as Parnell would return to the show in March 2002.
Will Ferrell really pushed for Ellen DeGeneres to host this show. That explains why he was in almost every sketch.
The climax of the "Ellen Loves Mango" sketch spoofs the "Can't Buy Me Love" sequence from the film A Hard Day's Night.
