I doubt that a vacation kayaking disaster had anything to do with it.
The whole thing with Kristen's departure fandango was weird and remains unresolved. We now know that Andy had already decided to leave and had probably told Lorne. Jason had been talking as if he was done with SNL for a year. Just before the new season started, he stated that he wanted an increased role on the show if he was to continue. Yet he did come back, apparently with no increased role. We'll probably never find out the whole story about his negotiations with Lorne, whether he was determined to leave after last season and was lured or coerced into delaying his decision, why he ultimately did come back for less than he wanted, etc. I do think that when he finally decides to go, he will be given a big bow-out of his own at Homebase.
Kristen, you will note, has been studiously silent about the whole thing since she left.
Andy is the one who got screwed. Or rather, all three of the Lonely Island crew. If they hadn't had the Digital Shorts to balance out the Kristen Wiig Weekly Telethon phase of SNL, the show today would be viewed as a moribund dinosaur on the verge of cancellation. SNL would be dead to the youth demographic.
I hope that Lorne someday gives those guys their due, because he will get to ride out his string to a glorious retirement as the legendary genius of SNL because they recreated SNL for the 14-20 demographic.
