Well before Mick Jagger & Martin came into the Californians sketch, it was totally bombing & was completely pointless & dumb. If that thing wasn't a one-trick pony at best...

If you have the chance to watch the last sketch again, check out Sudeikis' face and body language. It looks like he's about to faint or break out crying. I think it's obvious that it's his last episode as well and it's finally hitting him. He hardly moves when they're all dancing around at the end.

Yeah, you're right. Just saw it again, it looks more obvious now!
He was visibly distraught. I feel bad for him.
Yeah, it was sad to watch him. He left right after Jagger said good night.

I think Lorne wanted that to be another Debbie Downer (The cast laughs, The audience laughs) and it did (The cast didn't laugh, The audience didn't laugh)

If Rock of Ages bombs (and I agree, it will) it'll be Tom Cruise's fault, not Will's. Whoever thought that Cruise could carry a rock parody comedy should be taken out and shot.

Will is working steadily. He doesn't need to cameo on SNL for the PR bump.

Not good. That's not the way to make a sketch work. Sounds exactly like something Fallon tried to do in most of his sketches.

Lorne to Wiig on the goodnights: "Thanks for making my show relevant again since Will left!" *dance*

Suds was awfully emotional for a guy *if* he's not leaving. And he was front & center with Wiig in the graduation sketch. He was still there but lurking in the back row; couldn't even sing or clap along. Basically a deep breath and "okay" muttered.

I didnt think the Californians sketch would be too bad (IF THEY DONT REPEAT IT TOO MUCH, which you know they will!) if 1. it was shorter and 2. they didnt do that stupid looking in the mirror thing every 2 seconds. Dont find that funny at all.

I think they did that one because Kristen liked it. I don't expect to see it again.

I know nobody wants to read this, but I don't recall Carvey, Hartman, Myers or even Ferrell being in almost every single sketch in the first 40 minutes of the show / averaging 6 sketches a show in their last seasons. I think Wiig suffered from overexposure & the writers relied too much on her to the point of it being obscene. Something seemed very forced when she was considered the focal point of every sketch origin. It's like "yeah I really like Italian food, but not every single night". Maybe in retrospect I'll appreciate her more like I did with Ferrell.

Well I'll admit I've never seen that show, and from an outsider's perspective, it was more dumb than funny. It was like watching a bunch of dumb surfers.

Huh? What show? I was talking about the Californian's sketch, like they did this episode. I think they just kind of spoof stereotypes of how Californians are mixed with shows like The OC (even though that show is awesome and not like that sketch at all), so even if you dont watch that show, you still get the stereotypes and can find it funny. I didnt think it was too bad, just hated the "looking in the mirror and staring at yourself thing" theyd do after every 5 lines of dialogue. I wouldnt want it to repeat too much though but thats pretty much all SNL sketches.

Hmm, I thought "The Californians" was a real show (either by that name or another) they were spoofing. I now see a movie in 2005 had that name & it was also a 1950s TV show. So SNL actually just made an original sketch pulled out of thin air? Why a jab at people from California now & of all things? There's so many shows on TV these days I can't keep track of them all. I'd like to see a Philadelphia-based sketch on their sports fans starting fights! (complete with a bad Santa Claus, as well). Tho apparently Dodgers fans have been doing all of the fighting recently.

Personally, I think it's a spoof of daytime serials in general. SoapNet has two original series, and the networks have five combined (read: surviving) soaps. If any SNL recurring sketch is most under threat of aging badly in repeats, it's "The Californians" if only because there might not be any soaps five years from now.

It seems like a lot of sketches they're doing are like that, lately - stuff that no one will get at all 5 to 10 years from now. The sketches I like best have a timeless quality. Speaking of soaps, there was some actor I saw a few years ago who I thought would had been a good fit for SNL, tho I couldn't tell you who or what soap it was, but I think it was on CBS.

It's hard to compare the renaissance cast to the current crew. After all, between when Carvey, Hartman et al. were hired and when they left, the cast nearly tripled in size. The writers were too preoccupied trying to dream up ensemble sketches.

The controversy about Kristen's "graduation" sketch continues to roil:
