Martin Short is the first alum to host this season... and I'm really excited for this! It's his third time, and the fourth for Paul McCartney.

For those of you who have watched the Season 5 DVD set, Paul was more of a special guest than a musical guest. His one "performance" in the episode was the TV debut of the "Comin' Up" music video. Enough semantics from me, though.

Considering how Short disappeared from sight after his wife died, it's nice to see him back on his feet. However, it's hard to tell what he's promoting exactly (besides "Canada's Got Talent").

I didn't even know he was on that, and I live here! IMDB has him doing a voice in an upcoming animated movie, so there's that. I guess he's not promoting anything?

He was reunited with his "SCTV" co-star Catherine O'Hara as voices in Tim Burton's Frankenweenie recently so there's that...

I stand corrected... sort of. Citytv cancelled the show after only one season.

He was also in Madagascar 3 & I'm assuming he's hosting cause someone dropped out.

He was in Madagascar 3 with Ben Stiller who was in Tropic Thunder with Bill Hader

I know it's mean of me to say, but I think they booked Marty because they couldn't get anyone better. He's treading water just above has-been status at this point.

I was surprised. I thought they'd get someone from a holiday movie.

I think it's the same deal as with Dana Carvey back in 2011, where they were booked because of their connection to the show and status as icons of comedy rather than anything they've done recently. However, I think Carvey had shot a TV pilot around the time he hosted, though it was never picked up.

I'm kind of underwhelmed by McCartney appearing again. I liked his performance two seasons ago, but there are a lot of newer acts I'd prefer to see over Macca doing what I presume will be a rendition of "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time".

My most educated guess is that Macca is playing one song from Kisses on the Bottom, some other holiday standard, and a mystery third song.

She was in the Opening Credits and Goodnights.

Part of the problem of having 5 women in the cast. There's only so many roles.

    That's not misogynist.

It's not a problem, it's an opportunity. They have been very lucky in that three out of the four newbies in the latest round of cast additions look to be real keepers, and two of the four have been immediately quite productive. That those three happen to be women is a production issue, not a problem. In this instance you definitely change the show to fit the cast instead of letting the best of your newer cast talent lie fallow. I mean, it will be ridiculous if they don't do that. Run dreck like that idiotic drag sketch from the Daniel Craig episode, or write new sketches featuring the women as leads? The choice is obvious.

(They're probably going to need to produce a lot more sketches with roles for women in the second half of the season anyway. Only two of the ten fall hosts were women, a relatively low ratio. I suspect they'll have a lot more women hosting after the holiday break, meaning they'll need to write a lot more sketches like Girlfriends Talk Show. Again, this is an opportunity to write more material like the Tell Him sketch from last season.)

Would you rather it was ten years ago, when the show was cycling through the likes of Dean Edwards, Jeff Richards, Rob Riggle, etc., trying to find new blood?

Looks like we got a Connecticut cold opening, amazing they went back in to film it in time for the show.

    Holy cameos Batman!

Kristen Wiig, Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tina Fey. All in the monologue.

And the non-cold open tonight? Classy move.

Martin Short's monologue was good I sense a classy night for SNL this time around.
