The two selections that Jennifer Holliday performs were from the smash Broadway musical "Dreamgirls," in which Holliday played the scorned Effie. Coincidentally, 25 years after this broadcast first aired Eddie Murphy would receive an Academy Award nomination for his work as James Early in the film adaptation of the musical.
In the "Mafia Stereotypes" sketch, Tino asks Vito why Don Pardo's photo isn't on the Don Wall of Fame, prompting Vito to snap at Tino, telling him to never mention Don Pardo again. This was a sly reference to the longtime announcer's abrupt dismissal from SNL during the Summer of 1981.
