Ray Donovan, Secretary of Labor in the Reagan administration from 1981-85, was originally scheduled to host this episode.
This is the third season in a row to have no featured players (the only time this has happened since the first four "classic" seasons).
Beginning with this episode, this season also featured a bizarre (yet memorable) opening montage, depicting the SNL cast as giants in New York City with flying hot dogs and cockroaches.
With this broadcast, Billy Crystal is the first actor to join the cast after hosting the show.
Billy Crystal is the "host" of the show, performing the monologue and anchoring "Saturday Night News" as his alter ego Fernando Lamas.
Christopher Guest, Martin Short, Billy Crystal, Rich Hall and Pamela Stephenson join the cast with this episode.
Harry Shearer becomes the "Grover Cleveland" of SNL by returning to the cast four years after he left the show.
