Saturday Night Live

Season 2 Episode 8

Paul Simon/George Harrison

Aired Saturday 11:30 PM Nov 20, 1976 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Allegedly, George Harrison was so stoned during "Here Comes the Sun" he forgot the words to his own song.

  • Quotes

    • Jane Curtin: Actor Harry Reams, the largest member of the cast of Deep Throat, attended a star-studded party to raise money for his legal defense funds. It was there that he unveiled a new Harry Reams cocktail, which, although it contains no beer, still has a head. (frowns) It's my job, Mom, I'm sorry...

    • Jane Curtin: A report released this week by Carter campaign treasurer Robert Lipscwitz states that Jimmy Carter spent nearly $35 million to win the presidency. (cut to image of Carter shaking hands with passerby) The President-Elect is shown here begging on the streets of Plains for money to make up his deficit.

    • Jane Curtin: A long-term study of contraception has resulted in a highly favorable evaluation of the diaphragm, as opposed to the oral contraceptive pill, which has had controversies over its side effects. The major complaint about the diaphragm, compared to the pill, is that the diaphragm is much harder to swallow.

    • Rod Serling: Submitted for your approval: three pretty girls, all of them actresses, locked in a motel room, each possessing similar charms and talents. Victims of a bizarre joke, perhaps. Or perhaps this: a man creates a television show. He goes to a lot of parties. He meets a lot of pretty actresses. He wakes up in the morning, perhaps he's had a little too much to drink. He doesn't remember the promises he made the night before. Although he's a brilliant writer and creator, he's also human, and he has his needs. That's why he arranged this meeting, and, in a few moments, will cross forever into "The Twilight Zone".

  • Notes

    • The original live broadcast of this episode began with a bumper reading "THE VOICE OF DON PARDO LIVE," as Pardo read a disclaimer stating that portions of tonight's broadcast were previously recorded.

    • When this show was reran on 11/30/91, several edits were made. Paul's performance of "Something So Right" and George's promotional film for "This Song" were cut, and "Little Chocolate Donuts" and the Paul Simon-Connie Hawkins basketball game were added in from other shows. The 1991 edit appeared on Classic SNL twice: once in 1998 and again in 2001.

    • The musical segments (Here Comes the Sun and Homeward Bound) were recorded on Thursday 18 Nov 76. Simon & Harrison recorded Here Comes the Sun (3 takes), Homeward Bound, Bye Bye Love, Don't Let Me Wait Too Long, Yesterday, Bridge over Troubled Water, Rock Island Line and Ride of the Valkyries. This entire performance is available on the Harrison bootleg Living in the Underground. Homeward Bound was officially released on Nobody's Child: Romanian Angel Appeal (Warner Bros. 26280).

    • Chevy Chase's cameo appearance during the cold opening was also prerecorded.
