  • A great tribute amidst a horrible tragedy

On September 11, 2001, the world changed. New York City was dead center. Saturday Night Live, one of the city's finest institutions, had the duty to pay tribute to the thousands of lives lost during that fateful day. They enlisted the help of New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, two dozen members of the New York Fire and Police Department, and SNL frequentee Paul Simon. In a touching memorial, Giuliani talked about heroism and how New Yorkers should not surrender to terrorism, but rather, to live life normally. Paul Simon, wearing a FDNY cap and surrounded by the American flag, sang his song "The Boxer". The cold opening was concluded by Lorne Michaels asking the question everyone needed to know, "Can we be funny"? And Rudy answered "Why start now?".

Reese Witherspoon was great in this episode. Alicia Keys, with her popular song "Fallen", was a brilliant musical guest. There were some great sketches, such as "The Little Mermaid". Weekend Update was great, as usual.

This was all in all a brilliant episode.
