Sigourney Weaver stumbles on Buster Poindexter's name and restarts her introduction to his second number in the live broadcast. This is corrected in reruns.
The NBC rerun of this show cuts Hef-Tea Tea Bags and Buster Poindexter singing "Smack Dab In The Middle". They are replaced with "un film de", a short film about pretentious filmmakers.
"Chuch Chat" was the last sketch aired in the dress rehearsal, but it was moved up to the first sketch after being a huge hit with the audience.
In response to the 1985 season's lackluster cast and writing, NBC at one point pulled the plug on SNL, during the summer, only to give it one more chance at the last minute. Madonna, who a year earlier had hosted the 1985 season premiere episode, appeared in the cold opening of this 1986 season premiere, reading a letter from the NBC staff, claiming that ALL of last season "...was all a dream...A horrible, horrible dream."
This episode marks a "rebirth" for SNL. Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Jan Hooks, Victoria Jackson, and featured player Kevin Nealon joins the show, creating one of the strongest ensembles in the show's history.
