Steve Martin: Well, good evening! Hey - welcome to "Saturday Night". I know what you're saying, you're saying, "Hey! Wait a minute. Steve's wearing loafers. No laces on his shoes" [ breaks into song ] "Born to be wi-i-i-ild!"
First appearance of the Festrunk Brothers (aka The Wild and Crazy Guys or The Czech Brothers).
In the original live broadcast, because two sketches ran long, the ten-to-one was squeezed out and the last commercial break ran two minutes longer than usual. In repeats, "Lorne Michaels' Second Offer to The Beatles" from Season 1 is included to pad time.
For this season, aside from the other set changes, the "Weekend Update" set is also transformed. The two-tone blue background with rows of 'WEEKEND UPDATE' in a pattern appears to have been modeled after that on the set of New York station WABC-TV's "Eyewitness News" as was in place from 1975 to 1978 (per link: http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/international/us_abc_wabc.html and picture URL: http://www.tv-ark.org.uk/international/images_us_abc/wabc-ewn77-larrykane.jpg). Also this season, a "circle WU" logo is displayed on the jacket lapels of the "Update" anchors, most likely modeled after the "circle 7" logo in use at WABC.
The show undergoes a major makeover this season. This episode opens with an entirley new opening montage (used for this episode only), and the home base basement set is replaced with a warehouse-type set. As well, a new standard living room set is constructed, and even the superimposed text font face is changed.
This is the first episode feautring "Weekend Update" with Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd.
