Episode Summary

Just as Zack and Kelly are getting pretty close, Kelly is accepted to the Semester on the Sea program, which involves a three-month cruise. Zack doesn't want Kelly to go, but she feels it's an opportunity she can't pass up. Zack tries to get accepted into the program as well, but none of his schemes work. He tries to get Screech to quit the program by scaring him, but that backfires.

Zack has a dream that Kelly is with another guy on the ship. When he wakes up, he goes into Kelly's room, wakes her up, and asks her to marry him. Kelly says she has to think about it--and she's still going on the cruise.

Meanwhile, Alex and Slater are finding that they don't have anything in common. Slater wants Alex to do something he likes for a change, which is to go to a car show with him. She refuses. Another girl overhears and offers to go with Slater instead. Leslie finds out that Slater is seeing another girl, and she eventually forces him to tell Alex about it. Alex is hurt, but in the end they decide to part as friends.

As Screech is getting ready to leave, Zack tries to make up with him by giving him a book as a gift, which Screech accepts. Zack is still angry with Kelly and refuses to go and see her off. However, just as the ship is getting ready to sail, Zack shows up with flowers for Kelly to say goodbye "the right way." Kelly suddenly decides she wants to marry Zack right away. They run off the ship just before it sails.

  • Zack finally asks Kelly to be his wife

This is one of the stand-out episodes of The College Years. It contains the moment a majority of fans of the original SBTB show have been waiting for since the beginning - Zack Morris finally proposes to long-time love and girlfriend Kelly Kapowski.

Zack and Kelly have finally overcome their obstacles and are now dating. All is well, until Dean McMann announces Kelly has a place on a cruise overseas for a semester. Zack is obviously devastated, as he knows she will accept the offer, and he can't bear the thought of losing her again like he did in high school. A dream he has of her kissing another guy on the cruise forces him to take drastic measures before its too late. He wakes up Kelly at night, and proposes to her in front of roommates Alex and Leslie. Kelly's shocked, and initially thinks he's just doing it through fear of losing her. But he assures her he's wanted to propose for years, as he's always known he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Kelly at first rejects his proposal, assuring him she'll only be gone a few months. But later that day, just as the cruise ship is about to set sail, Kelly changes her mind once she realises Zack is serious and so are their feelings for each other. She accepts his proposal this time and they rush back to the college dorms together.

A happy ending to an eventful episode. A memorable one for Kelly/Zack fans.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • Zack tells Kelly that he has loved her since kindergarten, but that he had a crush on Marcia Brady. Kelly was not in junior high with him: "Good Morning, Miss Bliss". She came on the scene in high school: "Saved By the Bell".

    • Dean McMann tells Kelly that she was accepted into the Semester and Sea program and she leaves in less than a week. There are logistic problems that are not recognized. Kelly would need a pass port, which takes weeks (if not months) to obtain. Since Kelly was from a poor family, it is not likely that she had traveled abroad and would already have a passport as a freshman in college.

    • At the beginning of this episode the gang is watching "Love Story" a 1970 movie.

    • The book that Zack gives Screech in an attempt to make up is the same book that Screech had when the gang went to Jesse's dad's hotel in SBTB.

  • QUOTES (0)

  • NOTES (1)

    • In the episode titled, "Love and Death," Zack rides a motorcycle into the dorm room. In this episode, which was shown the following week, Zack wears an Indian Motorcycle t-shirt. This reflects Mark-Paul's strong interest in motorcycles.

    • Zack says he had a crush on Marcia Brady. This is an allusion to the series, "The Brady Bunch." This series was aired originally from 1969 through 1974. Zack would have seen this show in re-runs.

    • Zack mentions the SS Minnow. The SS Minnow was the boat that crashed on a deserted island on "Gilligan's Island." The show, which starred Bob Denver and Alan Hale, Jr., was aired on CBS between 1965 and 1967. It is a legend of the re-runs.

    • In this episode, Alex references "Single White Female" a 1992 movie. The movie starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.
