Campaign Fever
AIRED:
Rachel needs some extra-curricular credits on her record, so she decides to run for student council president. The Drama Club is rehearsing a production of Bye Bye Birdie, but Mr. Belding informs them it must be cancelled since the budget committee has cut the club's funding. Eric nominates Katie to run for student council president to fight for the Drama Club. Katie's serious campaign is being outdone by Rachel's flashy but trivial campaign, so Nicky and Eric help Katie to liven things up. But when Katie tries to talk about the Drama Club issue, Nicky cuts her off. Screech's poll has the candidates neck-and-neck. Maria has the candidates on her Bayside TV show. They take questions from the audience, during which Rachel's campaign manager Ryan manages to turn the other clubs in school against the Drama Club. Katie loses the Drama Club support when it isn't mentioned in her campaign video. Afterward, Katie thanks Nicky for handling her campaign--then immediately fires him. She goes back to her old style of campaigning. Rachel realizes Katie is the better candidate and wants to be council president for the right reasons, so she withdraws from the race and gives her former rival her support.moreless

The episode starts off with Rachel in Beldings office going over her transcripts. He tells her she needs an extracaricular activity on her school record so itll look good when applying to colleges. She, with some convincing from Ryan, decides to run for Student Council President. Meanwhile Katie, Eric, and others are working on a play for the drama club when all of the sudden "The bearer of bad news Belding" comes in and says that the drama club is getting the axe due to budget cuts. Everyones outraged until Eric comes up with an idea for Katie to run for Student Council and show the school how much the drama club not only means to them but to the entire school. After a bunch of back and forth cheap shots from each of the camps it comes down to the final debate. Katie talks honestly about how much the drama club meant to her and says that it could be your club next that the board decides to cut. She proposes a student/faculty board where the decisions about cutting clubs and other things will go through them first. She then gives the microphone to Rachel. While listening to how brutally honest and serious Katie was about her speech she decides to do an unprecedented move and take herself out of the running and put all of her support towards Katie to everyones surprise. Belding casts the votes, after Screechs piece of crap voting machine malfunctioned making him look stupid as usual, and Katie wins unanimously making her Student Council President. Im too peaced out to write my usual long reviews on this one but i will share the funniest moment of the episode. Its when Screech wants Belding to test out his new voting machine. Belding steps inside the booth and the entire f'n thing collapses on top of him...LOL.moreless

    • During Katie's campaign video you see exterior shots of Bayside High School. This is an extreme rarity. The only other time the exterior of Bayside High School was shown was in the beginning of the "Wedding In Las Vegas" TV Movie when Zack, Slater, and Screech visit it to reminisce on their memories there.

    • The election story is somewhat similar to the one in "The Election" episode of the original Saved by the Bell series.

    • Eric (Anthony Harrell) performs a little bit of the song "We Love You Conrad" from the musical Bye Bye Birdie.

    • Footage used in the opening credit sequence that comes from this episode includes Rachel (Sarah Lancaster) wearing a red dress and a campaign button, Rachel making a speech, Maria (Samantha Becker) with a microphone, Eric (Anthony Harrell) performing a rap and Katie (Lindsey McKeon) at a campaign rally wearing a green dress.
