Another new school year starts up at Bayside and it surprisingly wasnt a bad episode. It starts off with the gang all upset over Ryan not being around anymore as he had transferred to a prviate school on the other side of the country. The gang all thinks that Liz is going to be all broken up about it, because her and Ryan were going out at the end of last season, but to their shock she seems normal and even a little too happy. They all think its a front and shes really masking her emotions. To everyones shock, including mine, the ending has Liz faking to the gang that shes upset to get them off her back. They believe her and are happy that she finally showed some "emotion" but after the act she goes arm in arm with another guy so maybe she wasnt as upset as everyone thought shed be. Only time will tell.

The next plot has to do with the character that replaced Ryan, a former Valley and new Bayside star Quarterback Tony Dillon. Unfortunately for him, Maria despises him because of an incident that happened when they went to junior high together. The incident was Tony standing up Maria at her junior high prom. On the reals though its been four years Maria. Can we say obsessive a little too much...LOL. Things get off to an even worse start for them as Maria tries to make amends with Tony and they set up a lunch get together at The Max. Tony fails to show up again and now Maria is really infurated. She starts spreading rumors to the other football team members about how Tony was talking smack about them. They believe her and proceed to beat the crap out of him during practice. The next day Tony is working at The Max and he confronts Maria about how he knows it was her that spread the lies to the football team. She admits it and doesnt seem too upset about it. This leads to Tony rasing his voice at her. The manager overhears this and fires Tony on the spot for dissrespecting customers. Katie finally becomes the voice of reason and tells Maria to hear him out as to why he "stood her up" those two times. She ends up asking him and finds out that neither was done on purpose. He was late to The Max meeting because a job interview ran late. He stood her up at the junior prom because he had on a busted ass tux and was too embarrassed to go. After hearing him out Maria realizes she was in the wrong and says she'll tell the players she lied and since she knows the owner of The Max she'll get him his job back. So it looks like the slate gets wiped clean between the two of them.

The third plot was about Beldings son little Zack (from the original SBTB episode "Earthquake") visiting Bayside for the day since Mrs. Belding was out of town. Little Zack thinks his dads a wimp because hes a principal so Screech leaves it up to him to prove little Zack wrong. He does everything from planting fake thugs for Belding to scare in front of his son, which works for a minute until they come up and ask for payment from Screech for acting right in front of Beldings son. Another Screech attempt was putting fake weights up so when Belding went to lift them it would seem very easy to do. The first set works out but little does Screech know that some football jocks spotted the fake weights and put real ones on it just as Belding is about to lift them. He falls back on his ass with them being so heavy in your typical idiotic Belding moment to his sons corny ass "shaking head in dissapointment" reaction. It takes Screech to get no other then basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to show up and lecture little Zack that his high school principal played an integral part in his life and made him the man he is today. Zack hears this coming from a legendary figure and changes his mind and in the end thinks his dad is cool.

Lately ive been dissapointed in the New Class episodes ive been reviewing but this one actually wasnt that bad. Even though Tony gets annoying in future episodes the back and forth banter/flirting between him and Maria was good to see and didnt seem forced. The Belding plot was the weaker of the three (what else is new) but it still had its moments. What usually ends up being cornball scenes, the scenes where Screech tried to make Belding look like a tough guy, were actually pretty funny. The only complaint i have about this episode was the loss of Ryan. He was one of my all-time favorite New Class characters and it sucked big time not to see him there, besides the picture collage that Katie had put together of him. Overall this episode was a pleasant surprise and hopefully wasnt a one episode wonder.moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • NITPICK: This episode seems to suggest that harrassing somebody is all right if you think you have good cause to. Is such really the case?

For instance...after Maria lies to the Bayside football team that Tony has been badmouthing them, and they seriously injure him during practice, nothing happens to either her or the team. It's a wonder Belding would even let Bayside's team play their season in view of something like this, given that real-life high schools have been taken to court over LESS than what happened to Tony.

Moreover, why does Tony stubbornly continue his attempt to patch things up with Maria instead of simply writing her off? Granted, we would have no episode if he did the latter. Still, wouldn't it make more sense to ask Liz or Katie out instead? After all, everyone else SAVE Maria appears willing to hear Tony's version of what happened with himself.

Also, has anybody else noticed that--even when the truth comes out at the end, and Maria confesses everything she did to Tony--she never gets disciplined or even spoken to (except by her friends) about it?

  • QUOTES (0)

  • NOTES (4)

    • Belding's son little Zack makes his first appearance since the original Saved By The Bell episode titled "Earthquake" in which Mrs. Belding gives birth to him in a Bayside High School elevator.

    • Its found out through Nicky that Ryan transferred to a prestigous private school that's located "3000 miles away," thus being the reason why he isnt going to Bayside anymore.

    • Richard Lee Jackson (Ryan) does not return for season six and new cast member Tom Wade Huntington (Tony Dillon) is introduced.

    • This was the original final season for Saved by the Bell: The New Class. NBC decided to split the 26 episodes and broadcast them over two seasons of 13 episodes each. So the final episode was filmed early in 2000. Ashley Lyn Cafagna (Liz) had already joined the cast of the The Bold and the Beautiful, Samantha Becker (Maria) made appearances on The Parkers, Lindsey McKeon (Katie) would be a part of the short-lived Fox series Opposite Sex, and Anthony Harrell (Eric) released his first album-Sernade, did a few Gap commercials and tried out for a soap opera.
