Episode Summary

EDIT
Student Court
AIRED:
Mr. Belding and Screech are promoting the "Rainy Day Indoor Sports Festival," with the winning team getting a trip to Catalina Island. Eric is plagued by a tough guy, Bull Grabowski. Maria likes Scott Miller, but he already has a girlfriend, Natalie. Screech gives citations to Eric, Maria and Ryan for minor offenses and makes them appear before the Student Court. When the kids protest their sentences, Screech cancels the punishment but makes them into the new judges for the Court. The kids all abuse their positions on the court to help them win the Festival competition: Eric gives Bull a stiff sentence for chewing gum, Maria manipulates a breakup between Scott and Natalie so she can be Scott's partner, and Ryan "sentences" Nicky and Katie to detention in the gym so they can practice pool. Katie's a great pool player and Ryan makes a bet with some other guys in a game with her. When Belding catches them, he sends them to Ryan for punishment, and he makes it clear he expects Ryan to do the right thing. When the case comes up, Maria and Eric are ready to let Nicky and Katie off with a slap on the wrist, but Ryan, the chief judge, overrules them and gives them the prescribed punishment of no extracurricular activities for a month, which means they will miss the Festival and Ryan will most likely miss out on a weekend in Catalina with Rachel. Maria and Eric agree, and they undo the unfair sentences they gave to their competitors.moreless

The episode starts out with the announcement that a sports festival will be held and the winning team gets a trip to the island of Catalina. I know my past reviews have gone on for ages so ill try to make this short and to the point. Mr. Belding assigns Ryan (the chief judge), Eric, and Maria as the heads of the Students Court, which hands out punishments, after the three of them complained that the previous runners of it were unfair. Unfortunately they let the power get to their heads. For example a bully that repeatedly picked on Eric got caught chewing gum and instead of a slap on the wrist, Eric orders him to scrape the gum off of every desk at Bayside and The Max. This is just one of many examples of how they intend to use their powers to overpunish their competitors in the contest and win the island vacation. Unfortunately Ryans put in an awkard situation in that Katie and Nicky were cutting class to practice pool and got caught. He punishes them to "detention" in the pool room with his lame ass reason being so that they can "go back to the scene of the crime" while that lughead Screech believes it (How did this trick named Screech ever pass anything in his life???). While getting taunted at The Max about Katie being a "girl" player, her and Nicky agree to hustle the guys at the pool table in Bayside (smart move you future Harvard Grads). Belding catches them betting in the act and sends them to Ryan for punishment. The usual punishment for their f' up would be a months worth of after school activities taken away (which obviously includes the sports festival). Ryans now at a moral crossroads in that if he lets them off with a slap on the wrist theyll all be able to go to Catalina but obviously its not the right thing to do morally. He sleeps on what his decision will be until the day of the hearing. When their case comes up, Eric and Maria are ready to let them off with a slap on the wrist as quick as can be. After a brief hesitation, Ryan overrules their decisions and sentences them to the proper punishment of no afterschool activites for a month. Obviously this means no festival and no island vacation.

The thing i dont understand is how understanding Nicky and Katie were. I realize he did the right thing but still id be at least a little pissed off instead of basically no reaction at all. The episode as a whole was pretty good and taught the lesson that you cant let your friends get in the way of the job you have to do. Its funny cause it reminded me so much of the original SBTB episode titled "Student-Teacher Week" where Zack is put in a similiar dilemma as Ryan was. If you havent seen it id suggest you watch it and see the similarities. Thats all for now. See you at my next review kids.moreless

    • Maybe it's been a long time since we were in high school, or maybe things are different in California, but Bayside seems to have a very relaxed dress code. Rachel (Sarah Lancaster) predates Britney Spears as the Queen of the Bare Midriff. Many of her outfits would get her sent back home at a lot of real-life high schools. None of the boys ever seems to be told to tuck in or button up a shirt, either.
