Saved by the Bell

Season 1 Episode 1

Dancing to the Max

Aired Saturday 11:00 AM Aug 20, 1989 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Mr. Margolies had to teach both music classes simultaneously because the other music teacher was out of commission but he had to go back and forth classrooms every moment. Wouldn't it be easier if he just teach both classes in the same room?

  • Quotes

    • Kelly: What happened to you?
Lisa: I kicked the TV and sprained my ankle.
      Jessie: Why?
Lisa: I was watching the new Revlon commercial and they discontinued my nail polish.

    • Zack: Come on Jessie, there's lots of guys taller than you.
      Jessie: Name one.
      Zack: Kareem Abdul Jabbar?

    • Zack: Jessie, I'm in big trouble.
Jessie: What did you do, sell your parent's house again?

    • Danny: Jessie, would you like to be my dance partner in the contest?
Jessie: (standing up) I'd love to...(seeing how short Danny is) but I don't believe in dance contests.

    • Screech: (To the doll he was dancing with after being turned down by Lisa) It's all your fault, I told you to let me lead!

    • Casey Kasem: C'mon everybody, let's do the... the.. the Sprain.

  • Notes

    • When casting the role of Kelly, it came down to three finalists: Jennie Garth, Elizabeth Berkley, and Tiffani-Amber Thiessen.

    • Saved by the Bell originally started out as Good Morning, Miss Bliss, when that show tanked, it was re-vamped, kept students Zack, Screech, Lisa, and Principal Belding, getting rid of the other characters, added new character (Kelly, Slater, and Jesse) and changed the location from Indianapolis to California for high school.

    • Camp's song with Bob Gibson, "You Can Tell the World", was covered by Simon and Garfunkel on their first album, "Wednesday Morning, 3 a.m.".

    • Funny music and actor connection in this episode. The Bach piece being played during music class is the (Anna) Minuet In G Minor from the Anna Magdalena Notenbuch (Notebook). In 1965, the music was set to words for a charting song called A Lover's Concerto by The Toys. The previous year, Hamilton Camp released a solo album, Paths Of Victory, which has been re-released in the recent past on CD.

    • Interestingly enough, both guest stars in this episode, Casey Kasem and Hamilton Camp, are well known for their voices, if not necessarily their faces. Both are voice actors with many roles in the business. Kasem probably is best known for Shaggy from Scooby Doo and Camp as Gizmo Duck from Duck Tales.

    • Funny that Hamilton Camp should play a music teacher. Under the name of Bob Camp, he played in a folk duo with Bob Gibson. Gibson And Camp even recorded an album.
