Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Show Summary

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Goodbye, Mr. Despair) is a story about a young teacher disenchanted with life. In trying to understand why life is worth living in the current corrupt world, he discovers that the children he teaches all can view the world in a positive light in their own ways. The teacher soon finds out that he is learning much more than he is teaching. Itoshiki Nozomu is the world's most negative person. To his way of thinking, there is no hope or meaning in this existence. Even the three kanji of his name become the two-kanji word zetsubou, "despair", when compressed. What an ironic twist of fate, then, that he becomes teacher to a class containing his precise opposite, the invincibly positive-minded Fuura Kafuka.

  • I'm in despair! The awesomeness of this show about a suicidal teacher has left me in despair!

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is about the misadventures a depressed teacher and his very weird students. It's rather satirical of Japanese society as well as the whole world at times. Nozomu Itoshiki, the teacher, will often find things that leave him in despair, while one student full of hope, Kafuka Fuura, tells him how good these things really are. It's a really hilarious show and it's really different from other anime. It's dark, but it's also very silly. Most silly anime I see are usually rather lighthearted, but Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is totally dark, making things like suicide, scary sights, and the terrors of society into jokes. The characters are pretty cool as well. I love Itoshiki-sensei, but two other characters I like as well are Chiri and Maria. Chiri's homicidal perfectionism and Maria's... well, everything about Maria, make me laugh a lot. I have to give Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei an A.moreless
