    "Escape From Mystery Manor"

    Grade: A*

Wow! This was an incredible episode! It's amazing to see how far a Scooby Doo episode can push the boundaries. This episode is easily one of the darkest episodes of the series, in which the villian actually sets up traps in his mansion to kill the gang. Obviously no one is hurt, but a sense of danger mixed with mystery is always a good Scooby Doo adventure. I love how Fred and Daphne escape the pool trap, despite Fred being a bit joking on the subject due to obsession with traps, and Scooby being the one to save Shaggy and Velma from the wired traps.

It's also awesome to know there was a Mystery Inc before the gang, and that the ending is actually quite sad and dark to know that the villain outlived everyone he loved and had no purpose of continuing to live, so he allows himself to die. Overall, Escape From Mystery Manor was an awesome episode example of showing how to do a serious Scooby Doo and is one of my favourite episodes as a result.

  • Hello there, Mystery Incorporated... I wanna play a game.

Following another clue that Mr. E left for them, Scooby and the gang head to Darrow College, where they hope to find out what the clue is really about. Knowing that Darrow College was build on the place where the old Darrow family's mansion stood, they manage to enter in the mansion, which is still intact, underground.

What they did not know is that the mansion is not unhabbited, and its resident wants them out by any means necessary, and in order to do that, he built traps through the whole mansion, in hopes to get them. A shocking twist is revealed in the end, and another clue joins the others that the gang managed to collect this far. The mystery is warming up, and Scooby and the gang lived to fight another day. P.S. The episode plays a real great homage to the SAW franchise. 10 out of 10!moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • The older version of Danny Darrow is physically modeled after the character Gollum from J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy The Lord of the Rings, more specifically the film version portrayed by Andy Serkis.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Daphne: After all that, he saved us.
Velma: Or did we save him?
Shaggy:: Like, he said this piece was...
      Scooby: Cursed!
Fred: Whatever it is, it's our responsibility now. The question is, are there more pieces out there? And if there, who else is looking for them?

    • Shaggy: Like, whoever this guy is, let's not invite him for dinner.
Danny Darrow: Don't worry, the only dinner being served tonight will be you! No one outwits Danny Darrow!

    • Shaggy: Like, where are we?
Phantom in the Radio: You are nearly at your moment of doom! Well, two of you are anyway. Someone in this room is big, fat, insecure and know-it-all. But, only the true smartest member of your party can figure out this trap and escape to live! Good luck!
Shaggy: Big, fat, insecure and know-it-all?
      Scooby-Doo: Who's that?
Velma: Oh, come on, I wouldn't exactly describe myself as big, or fat, or insecure. Am I?... Why are you two supportingly agreeing with me?!
      Shaggy: Huh?!
Scooby: What?! Oh, sorry... you're awesome.

    • Phantom in the Radio: Welcome back, Mystery Incorporated! This time you'll never leave! (laughs maniacally)
Fred: Who are you, and how do you know us?
Phantom in the Radio: I'm surprised you've forgotten, Mr. Perfect Big Chin Man.
      Daphne: Have you two met?
Phantom in the Radio: Oh, yes, yes, and I've been waiting for your return for a very long, long time. And I'm ready for you. This time, Mystery Incorporated, you will not exit this mansion alive!
      Scooby-Doo: This time?!
Phantom in the Radio: Yes, and in your honor I've set a very special set of traps.
      Fred: Did you say traps?
Phantom in the Radio: That's right, especially designed for my old visitors, Brad... you too, Judy... Cassidy... Ricky... oh, and of course, ever cunning, Professor Pericles.

  • NOTES (1)

    • The Darrow Family's Manor resembles Wayne Manor in the movie Batman Forever, starring Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, Nicole Kidman and Chris O'Donnell.

    • Jack Nicholson

When Danny tries to open the door, splintering it with a fire iron, we can see that this is an obvious allusion to Jack Nicholson and his famous part as Jack Torrance in the 1980 film The Shining, in particular the scene where he sticks his head through the broken door.

    • Jigsaw

The way Danny Darrow plans his vengeance against the original Mystery Incorporated, by booby-trapping the whole Darrow Manor is modeled after the M.O. of the character John Kramer aka. Jigsaw from the SAW franchise, played by Tobin Bell.

    • SAW

The episode is a parody to the horror movie franchise SAW, starring Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell and Shawnee Smith.
