Things go on the theatrical side in today's episode!
*The episode begins at City Hall, where the acting group is planning to reenact a historical moment 500 years ago; namely, when an earthquake sent the original Crystal Coves to its current place in the ocean!
*Apparently, a monk named "Friar Sera" and his donkey saved the people of the original Crystal Coves before it fell into the ocean. Doogle McGuiness (who first appeared in Grim Judgement) is set to play the friar and Burlington Library (which we first saw in Night Terrors) provided some of their exhibits to the play to add to it's authenticity.
*Before they can so much as practice the first rehersal, the mummy of Friar Sera reanimates and warns them that his story must not be told!
*We then cut to the Blake Mansion, where Daphne sneaks the rest of the gang in. Continuing from the previous episode, Daphne shows concern for Fred's current living arrangements and insists that he (and Nova) stay in one of the guest rooms of her house.
*Fred's explantation of his "hobo shampoo" was pretty funny!
*Soon after, Shaggy receives a text message...from Vincent Van Ghoul (making his first "official" Season 2 appearance)!
*Vincent Van Ghoul admitting he isn't good at texting was priceless and reminded me of a few of my older relatives!
*Vincent explains that Mayor Nettles hired him to direct the play after the initial cast and crew left, he just found the stage in ruins when he texted the gang for help.
*The "S Duo" agreeing to helpVincent and telling the remaining trio that they owe them for what they put them through was a Crowning Moment of Awesome!
*The gang see another familiar face in George Avocados, who reveals that after his farm was (accidentally) destroyed, the only source of income he could get was as a janitor at City Hall. He claims the one upside to this is watching Mystery Incorporated make fools of themselves.
*We then get a brief scene at Mr. E's lair where the 4 original members of Mystery Incorporated gather for a meeting. Pericles criticizes Brad and Judy for not being able to get the Planispheric Disc pieces from Fred and starts to hatch a new plan...
*Back at City Hall, it is decided that Shaggy will play Friar Sera, Scooby will play the donkey, Daphne will make the costumes, Fred will set up the stage and Velma will rewrite the script. The latter heads back stage to read up more on the event.
*While backstage, Velma looses her glasses for the second time in the series (the first being in Art of Darkness), but it only lasts for a few seconds...just in time for her to see the mummy of Friar Sera!
*The rest of the gang are being shown one ofVincent Van Ghoul's movies by the man himself as a way to help give them tips. Velma enters the room and informs them of her recent encounter!
*Naturally, Van Ghoul questions Mayor Nettles as to why she didn't mention the mummy to him sooner. She admits that she thought that the initial cast and crew were just making up the story and is genuinely sorry for the trouble placed on the B-Movie star. Van Ghoul is quick to quit until he hears about all the publicity the play will get, even when he finds out one of the critics is a rival of his who lost out on all the parts he got.
*While Van Ghoul continues to help the "S Duo" in acting tips, the remaining trio search backstage for more clues. They eventually findDoogle McGuiness, who isn't very thrilled with the idea of someone else having the lead role...
*When the trio return to the others front stage to report on their updates, they also find Avocados taking a break to laugh at them...right when the mummy of Friar Sera returns once again warning them not to tell the story!
*After the mummy disappears again, the gang and Van Ghoul begin to list of their theories of the suspect, until they finally agree that the only way to catch the culprit is for the show to go on...
*The montage of Mystery Incorporated and Van Ghoul setting up the play was really nice and showed their great team work!
*At last, it's opening night and things kick off with Van Ghoul narrating the prologue (though the audience isn't very enthusiastic).
*I don't know about anyone else, but the "S Duo"'s song and dance reminded me of "Thriller"!
*Friar Sera's mummy appears once again and gives chase to the "S Duo", now the audience is excited!
*The mummy is eventually captured and revealed to be...George Avocados! I figured it would be him as he was a red herring for 2 episodes. Fred and Daphne hanging a lampshade on this was priceless!
*George's story reveals that he found out his family's diamond was disguised as a doorknob...at the Burlington Library! When asked how the mummy appeared when he was present, George admits that he thought it was a trick on the gang's part to expose him as the culprit...
*Van Ghoul becomes nervous when his rival comes before him...until his rival says he enjoyed the play and gives him sincere praise!
*Backstage, the gang notices the mummy exhibit is still present...and then see the true ghost of Friar Sera appear before them! He says the story they've been told was a lie...the donkey actually destroyed the original Crystal Coves!
*We are then treated to an extensive flashback that reveals the oldest mystery solvers in the series to be Friar Sera, his donkey and three other monks! The Planispheric Disc is also revealed to corrupt any living being, including animals as the donkey was the most corrupted and destroyed the original town! This appears to explain Pericles (and possibly Brad, Judy and Ricky/Mr. E)'s turn to the Dark Side. The ghost continues that the animal is alway the first to be corrupted and reveals the full meaning behind the message from The Creeping Creatures ("The Dog Dies")! The ghost then vanishes, leavbing the gang (especially Scooby) struck with full, genuine fear!
Awesome episode! It was great to see Vincent Van Ghoul again (he's one of my favorite recurring characters in the show) and George Avocados finally be the "Villain of the Week"! What seemed like a "breather episode" at first ended up being a very crucial one thanks to some great twists, well done writers! If I had to guess, new episodes will probably start up again after 3 weeks (that way, each of these 15 episodes get a chance to air a rerun). In any case, this was a strong episode to end on before the break!
