This episode marks the second time one of the gang's girls disguises herself as one of the Hex Girls, in an attempt to catch a villain.
This is the second episode in the series in which Mr. E does not appear, or is mentioned by any of the characters.
This episode marks the fourth appearance of the Hex Girls in the Scooby-Doo franchise.
The Phantom: Listen, Hex Girls, carefully. You are bound for misery! This will be your final show. Or you will suffer endless woe! So saith the Phantom.
Fred: Daphne! Now I need to talk to her!
Daphne: Daphne's gone, call me Crush.
Fred: Darn it, lady, I'm serious! Where is she?
Daphne: Fred, it's me, okay?
(The Hex Girls play a song called "Trap of Love")
Daphne singing as Crush: Your unfeeling heart imprisons me,
careless eyes too blind to see,
Empty words an iron cage
broken heart bleeding rage,
Can't wait for you and me
it's time I break free,
Trap of love snared by desire
trap of love burned by your fire,
Trap of love snared by desire
trap of love beware the trap of love,
Velma: (talking to Fred backstage) What do you think of the new song?
(Fred doesn't say a word as he looks at Daphne)
Daphne singing as Crush: Let me be it's time we part
set me free uncaged my heart,
Can't wait for you and me
it's time for you to see,
Trap of love snared by desire
trap of love burned by your fire,
Trap of love snared by desire
trap of love beware the trap of love.
(crowd cheers and the song ends)
Phantom of the Paradise
The episode's title is an homage to the 1974 musical film Phantom of the Paradise, whose story is a loosely adapted mixture of The Phantom of the Opera, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Faust, having brief references to Frankenstein and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
The Hex Girls manager is obviously inspired in one of the main characters of the 1970 movie Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
"...class 4 noncorporeal phantom..."
Possibly a reference to the spirit classifications on The Real Ghostbusters. Curiously Frank Welker, the voice of Ray Stantz as well as Fred and Scooby, wasn't the one to deliver this line.
The way Fantzee Pantz was dancing was similar to Michael Jackson's Moonwalk.
The video web site Shaggy and Scooby were watching Fantzee Pantz's video on was called Ear Tube, which is an obvious parody of YouTube.
