Episode Summary

EDIT
With Mystery Inc. broken up, the gang decides to check out life after high school and spend a weekend at DARROW COLLEGE. But things don't go as planned when a creature called CHAR GAR GOTHAKON begins terrorizing the campus. Turns out this beast is a fictional character come to life. A creation of the author H.P. HATECRAFT who is a professor at the school. Although one of the other professors, HARLAN ELLISON, claims Hatecraft is a fraud, the creature is definitely real. And when it attacks and carries off Hatecraft to his doom, the gang realizes it has to come together once again to solve this mystery and save Hatecraft's life.moreless

This was a great episode. I'm still mad the gang broke up,but I was sorta happy when they got back together again at the end. The episode had some great action (It was terrifying watching the kids almost fall off the roof!). I was touched at the scene where Scooby said sorry to Velma ad he put his paw on her (It even made my heartless sister say "aww"). The ending was terrifying. "If the old mystery inc would of found this box, maybe they never would of disappeared in the first place". That line made me shudder! Overall, can't wait for the second half of this awesome season.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • The character of Ernesto is obviously based and modeled after Ernesto Che Guevara, the Argentine-born Cuban revolutionary.

    • At the beginning of the episode, just before Char Gar Gothakon appears for the first time, if you look closely you will see that there is an air freshener hanging from a rear view mirror which is shaped like Tweety Bird, a character from Looney Tunes.

  • QUOTES (0)

  • NOTES (1)

    • This episode is an obvious nod to the first Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo episode "The Scarab Lives," where a comic book character comes to life and haunts his creator. In this episode, we see the same thing; it's Hatecraft's literary character made real and eventually turns on him.

  • ALLUSIONS (6)

    • Robert E. Howard

The name of Professor Hatecraft's assistant Howard E. Roberts is a play on the American pulp fiction writer Robert E. Howard, most famously known for creating the character Conan the Barbarian.

    • In the Mouth of Madness

The episode's title may be a reference to the 1995 horror film In the Mouth of Madness, a film in which Lovecraftian horrors come to life out of books, starring Sam Neill, Julie Carmen and Charles Heston.

    • Lost

If you look carefully, inside the chest that Mr. E sent the gang, you will see a piece of paper where the infamous sequence 4,8,15,16,23,42 is written, which is an allusion to J. J. Abrams' series Lost, starring Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, Jorge Garcia, Naveen Andrews, Daniel Dae Kim and Yunjin Kim.

    • Galaxy Quest

When talking to Fred, his dad says "By Grabthar's Hammer", which is part of Dr. Lazarus of Tev'Meck catchphrase from the movie Galaxy Quest, staring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Sam Rockwell, Tony Shalhoub, Daryl Mitchell and Missi Pyle.

    • Casey Kasem

The burger place Burger Campus and the fact that the new management has turned it into a Vegan restaurant is a nod to Casey Kasem, the actor who voiced Shaggy in most of the franchise's incarnations, who got Hanna-Barbera to make Shaggy a vegetarian character, as part of his contract with the studio in the 80's, mostly because he also became vegetarian.

    • Authors

Harlan Ellison is a real life science fiction writer. H.P. Hatecraft is a takeoff on H.P. Lovecraft, who wrote books similar to the ones in this episode.
