  • A Fast Paced, Frantic Episode!

This truly is a unique episode. For one - it is set way out in China and has oriental ghosts. Second - it has the best chase scenes out of both seasons. The only bad thing about this episode is the plot. It is ridiculously stupid and barely makes a hint of sense. On a better note the setting is excellent, split between The Streets of China and a Fog shrouded Temple, it really is Class! The ghosts are great as well...but I don't mean Zen Tuo. No..I mean the two Zombie henchmen. They were great fun where as "Tuo" was basically the Dictator and did nothing much enjoyable! Overall this is a classic episode chocked full of fast paced, frantic chaos, and although it may not be one of my favorites, it is very good! 8.5/10 :Dmoreless

Inside a fog-shrouded temple, A sinister figure commands his skull-faced cohorts to retrieve the mask of "Zen Tuo." Down in the city below, the gang is watching a Chinese parade. After the parade, the gang goes to a curio shop where Daphne buys a golden mask. After they leave, they are menaced by the two zombie, but get rid of them after Scooby lays down a screen with a steam press from the Chinese laundry. The gang them visits a Chinese art authority where Mr. Fong, the art dealer, tells them that the mask belonged to a Chinese warlord named Zen Tuo. It was stolen from his crypt and his ghost has returned to seek it.

After leaving the art dealership, the gang is chased by the zombies who are driving in a black sedan. The chase ends with the gang crashing into a fishing dock. The zombies kidnap Daphne and the mask. The gang has no trail to follow, but they do find a scrap of paper that reads "Temple in the Hills." Fred, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby visit the reputedly haunted temple to search for Daphne. Inside the temple, Freddy and Velma find Daphne tied up a secret room, but the trapdoor slams behind them when they go in to rescue her. Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby run into Zen Tuo (who is now wearing the mask) but are unable to bluff him into retreating. Fleeing from Zen Tuo, the two run into the zombies, but escape by pretending to be Chinese waiters. But they run into a gong and are captured by Zen Tuo, who locks them in a storeroom of lit fireworks. They manage to put the fuse out and, after breaking out of the storeroom and trip the lever that frees the other members of the gang. Daphne takes the others to a pigeon coop she spotted when taken into the temple. It contains carrier pigeons being used to carry mysterious messages with dates and times on them. Freddy builds a trap containing a Chinese gong, some roman candles, and Shaggy's train set that manages to catch Zen Tuo and the zombies. Zen Tuo is unmasked as Mr. Fong, the art dealer and the leader of an international smuggling ring. Information on dates and times would enter the country hidden inside golden masks, then be sent to other gang members by carrier pigeon. (The mask Daphne bought had been sent to the wrong address by mistake.) The ghost setup was used to scare people away from the temple, which was the center of their operation.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (6)

    • There has been confusion about where this episode takes place. For all intents and purposes it takes place in China however during the chase scene the city looks like San Francisco therefore the episode must have taken place in Chinatown. However, the temple is Chinese in style.

    • Velma's glasses must be part mirror since it gave off a reflection of the scrap of paper that Scooby immediately recognized.

    • When Fred pulled the gag down off Daphne's mouth and after door shuts, Daphne is still tied up, but the gag is gone.

    • At the end of the episode, when Shaggy and Scobby jump for (and miss) the last Scooby Snack, Shaggy lands on the left side of the screen and Scooby on the right side. After the mouse steals the Scooby snack and eats it in his closeup, Shaggy is now on the right side of screen and Scooby the left side.

    • Notice the scene when the gang crashes into the pile of fish at Fisherman's Wharf. When Scooby reaches down to pull Shaggy from the bottom of the pile (in both attempts), his entire arm changes to light green (the same color as Shaggy's shirt), then brown again.

    • Shaggy can be seen drinking a bottle of ether. Earlier he is seen drinking a fizzy drink.
