      • Swain: So this girl actually agreed to go out with you?
        Buffer: Yes.
Swain: Sorry, I'm not casting aspirations or anything, mate. Your payback has been pretty low.
        Buffer: Monica's different.
Swain: Monica? Well, that's a name. This isn't a relationship where money changes hands, is it?
Buffer: Oh, don't jinx it, Swaino!

      • Swain: Sally wants me to apply for a shore posting.
        Buffer: No way. Why?
Swain: Everything – nine month old baby, all alone. She needs me around. It's not easy for her.
Buffer: Yeah, mate, I can understand all that. But why?
Swain: Well, I'm missing out on things too, like little things that Chloe's learning to do, all those moments that don't come round twice, you know?
Buffer: Can't see you in a desk job, mate.

      • Swain: My Mum emailed, finally. Sal's gone to Perth, to her parents' place. She won't be answering my calls apparently. 'Least that's what I'm told. (breaking down) She left me. I mean, she's right of course. What kind of father can I hope to be when I'm stuck out here months at a time?
Nav: You know, Swain, my Dad was on Destroyers. He was away all the time. But when he was home, he was home all the time and we have a great relationship. I know you're gonna have that with Chloe. I know you will, I know you will.

      • E.T: Mate, I'm not telling you what to do, but maybe you should give it a rest for a while.
Swain: Really? It sounds like you're telling me what to do.
        E.T: Well, I'm not.
Swain: Yeah, well, you just did.

      • Swain: (about Saka) Nothing's going to happen to that boy.
Toka: Well, I'm sure his mother will take good care of him.
Swain: No, you're not listening to me. (hands over a wad of money) Nothing is going to happen to that boy. I'm holding you personally responsible for Saka's welfare. See, I know your type. I know what you're capable of. Consider this a payment in good faith, because if anything happens to him, anything, I'll come looking for you. You can count on it.

      • Mike: You didn't tell me where you were going.
        Kate: I didn't know.
        Mike: That's not very professional.
Kate: Sir, we're heading home. We don't need another debriefing.
        Mike: It's not a debriefing.
        Kate: Sounds like one.
        Mike: Can't I be concerned?
Kate: Yeah, sure. Just don't make it sound like a debriefing.

      • Sally: You didn't need to send me a social worker. I had about twenty people call me all of a sudden, totally out of the blue.
        Swain: Yeah.
Sally: Some of them I haven't spoken to for months and they told me that you called them.
Swain: I'm sorry. I just didn't know what else to do.
Sally: It was just I....I needed to get some sleep, for once. And I did and now everything's sort of making sense.
Swain: I can get that shore posting if you want.
Sally: I don't want you to do that. This is your job, I get that, and I know how much it means to you. But it has to work for me and Chloe too.
Swain: We got a lot of work to do, don't we?
        Sally: Yeah, we do.
