The scarlet ibis is a reference to a short story called "The Scarlet Ibis" written by James Hurst. The story is basically about a scrawny kid named Doodle (much like the kid in the class) who finds a dead scarlet ibis. A further reference can be found in the fact that Doodle is the only one in class who seems concerned about the bird, as this is basically the same in the story.
