  • Some loose ends with an old science project are tied up and the discovery of a lifetime is made.

This episode depicts clearly how trapped the military is into doing whatever they are told and following "procedure." That is why the Scientists on board provide a refreshing attitude who seem to focus much more so on the circumstances and the moral actions as opposed to what the UEO manual says about them. We see in Dr. Westaphalin a strong confident woman ready to lead the leaderless with Commander Ford and Captain Bridger away she steps in and provides the guidance and confidence the bridge crew needs to do the right thing. The explorers were interesting themselves and they had their own little quirks. One of them (who I believe they were implying was mentally handicapped though it was not clear) I found to be taking on almost a childlike role in the episode. Following only his passions and not allowing reason to factor into his decision making ability. The subplot between the older man and the young woman could've been more interesting but wasn't really developed well enough. Overall it was an interesting episode with some great plot lines exposed but perhaps it could've been a little bit better. If you enjoy seeing the military be made to look ineffectual and incomptent then this is the episode for you.moreless

  • TRIVIA (1)

    • At exactly 33:54 (on DVD) as the camera pans down from the tree to the tent and there is a car visible as it drives by, hidden mostly by the trees (just right of the center of the shot). It seems rather strange for an uninhabited island to have traffic.

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Bridger: (about the number Krieg slipped to Lucas) Lieutenant, how old is this Candy?
Krieg: Forty-three. (Bridger crumples phone number) But she's got a sixteen year old daughter, sir. They're lovely people.
      Bridger: Really?

    • Mack: [The U.E.O.'S] gonna make us stop.
Bobby: This isn't illegal. It's just stupid, and unless somebody comes from the board of education, we're probably safe!

    • Crocker: (playing fetch) Go get it. Well? Go get it!
      Darwin: You get it.
      Crocker: What?
      Darwin: Get it yourself.

    • Grant: (referring to the treasures they've found) Five years, and this is it. Hell, I could've gone swimming and gotten more than that.
Bobby: You got more than this, Grant. You just can't take it with you. But you've got proof.
Mack: Try spending that at your local Jeep dealership.

    • Dr. Young: (about the expected lava eruption) I assure you, there won't be time to feel pain. It will wash over us like a blanket of fire. We'll be like the head of a match when it's struck.
      Bobby: Will you shut up?

    • Phillips: I'm not authorized to fire torpedoes.
Westphalen: You're not firing torpedoes. You are firing a research tool at a volcano under the orders of the chief scientist. Fire the torpedoes!
      Phillips: All of them?
      Westphalen: I don't know.

    • Bridger: The U.E.O. is very unhappy about a science officer who was able to call up the full fire-power of the seaQuest.
Westphalen: What was I supposed to do? We had a crisis.
Bridger: I know, I know, but, uh, you tore up a mile and a half of the ocean floor. You fired off nine torpedoes when five would've been enough.
      Westphalen: I didn't know.
Bridger: That's my fault. Admiral Noyce and I are still arguing. He wants to know who's going to pay for the four unauthorized torpedoes.
Westphalen: You know what I say. Damn the torpedoes and full steam ahead.
