This episode depicts clearly how trapped the military is into doing whatever they are told and following "procedure." That is why the Scientists on board provide a refreshing attitude who seem to focus much more so on the circumstances and the moral actions as opposed to what the UEO manual says about them. We see in Dr. Westaphalin a strong confident woman ready to lead the leaderless with Commander Ford and Captain Bridger away she steps in and provides the guidance and confidence the bridge crew needs to do the right thing. The explorers were interesting themselves and they had their own little quirks. One of them (who I believe they were implying was mentally handicapped though it was not clear) I found to be taking on almost a childlike role in the episode. Following only his passions and not allowing reason to factor into his decision making ability. The subplot between the older man and the young woman could've been more interesting but wasn't really developed well enough. Overall it was an interesting episode with some great plot lines exposed but perhaps it could've been a little bit better. If you enjoy seeing the military be made to look ineffectual and incomptent then this is the episode for you.
