The first episode of the last series starts with archive footage of the fighting in France following D-Day. We immediately learn that the war has entered a new phase and the initial reaction of the members of Lifeline is not one of great joy. The confusion makes their work more difficult and the Germans prove to be more unpredictable, i.e. dangerous, than ever. Once again the show teaches us that war is complex thing.

A new character is introduced, the replacement for Major Brandt. Though a fascinating character, I couldn't help but feel that the war-weary Reinhardt was a bit of a cliché. We've just left behind the good Nazi, Major Brandt, and we get another one, an officer whose first act is to outwit Kessler. Makes good drama, but is perhaps not very realistic. I'd like to see a replacement officer being completely clueless at first.

There was one scene that confused me (again). On the French train a conductor speaks French. I thought all characters spoke English with an accent?moreless

    • Kessler: I trust we shall work together cordially, as I did with Major Brandt.
Reinhardt: Before he shot himself ...
Kessler: Before he had a reason, perhaps, to shoot himself.

    • Reinhardt: I'm told your shoulder is dislocated. Is it painful?
      Tucker: Not too bad.
Reinhardt: I've been shot down myself, so I know what it's like.
Tucker: Do you, sir? You were tortured too?

    • Reinhardt: Your country has censorship too. Films, plays, forbidden books too. James Joyce, DH Lawrence, ...
Tucker: I've read Lady Chatterley's Lover.
Reinhardt: But printed in Paris and smuggled in, I'm sure.
      Tucker: Yes, that's right.
Reinhardt: Did you like it? I found it rather tedious myself.
