  • The aftermath.

    8.5
Well this episode is pretty much an aftermath of the last episode, when Kramer burns down Susan's apartment, I cannot believe Susan hasn't dumped George yet, I mean really, she has been thrown up on, and her cabin burns down, and in this episode she finds out her father is gay because of George. So that is pretty crazy. Susan must really like George. Well besides that Jerry talks dirty to a girl and doesn't want Elaine to find out. And surprise, surprise! She finds out in the last second of the show after taking the money. That is why I love Elaine. Anyways Kramer's plot was sort of dry but great episode overall.moreless
  • Very clever

This is a classic Seinfeld episode. It has all the elements needed for successful episode, a good plot, fine acting (especially from the actress who played Susan’s mother) and plenty of jokes that consistently deliver guffaws and belly laughs all the way through. Who could forget when George, after hearing the dirty talk that Elaine’s secretary said to Jerry, involuntarily squeezed the ketchup bottle causing it to squirt off-screen. Its moments like that, and like Elaine’s zinger at the end (“My mother just bought me some panties and they’re all laid out for me”) that make this a memorable episode.moreless
  • Jerry offends Elaine's assistant with the "panty remark." Kramer makes a new contact for his Cuban cigars. A box of letters from John Cheever is all that remains after the Ross cabin burns down.moreless

I must admit I was pretty dissapointed with Season Four so far. It's considered to be a "breakthrough season", yet the first seven episodes (especially "The Bubble Boy") I thought were not of the same quality as Season Three delivered, perhaps because of my heightened expectations. Don't get me wrong, they were still funny, but not roll-over-on-the-ground funny like "the Boyfriend" or "The Fix-Up". That all changed when I saw this episode. I couldn't stop laughing! It may seem like a lot of things are going on, and it's true you may not laugh as much if you haven't seen the rest of the season(I do think a more appropriate title for this episode would have been "The Panty Remark"), but I don't think many episodes of Seinfeld could top this one, especially that last line.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • Spoiler alert!:
John Cheever was indeed bisexual. His stories in novels often revolved around the conflicts and secrets of upper middle-class families in the suburbs of New York (pretty much like Susan's). Also, Cheever's daughter is called Susan.

    • At the end of this episode, Elaine's line "I gotta go visit my mother, I just got new panties, and she laid them out for me!" received one of the loudest, longest laughs/applause throughout the series, that after this episode was filmed it had to be mixed and edited so it wasn't as long and loud.

    • When George and Susan are having dinner with Susan's parents, the clock on the mantle reads 8:20 throughout the entire meal.

    • Kramer says that the cigars he had were made especially for Castro...Castro smoked Trinidad Fundadors (a much skinnier cigar than the one shown)

    • At the very beginning, George and Jerry are grabbing notebooks to begin writing their script. Jerry grabs a pink one, George a blue one. As they reach the couch, George flips open his book as Jerry sits down. Seconds later, he's question Jerry's seating with book closed. After he sits down, he flips open a pink book!

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Elaine: (apologizing for Jerry) It's very hard being a stand-up comedian. Sometimes they don't laugh!

    • Kramer: (disdainful of public golf courses) It's crowded, the grass has big brown patches in it, they don't rake the sand traps. Not to mention the caliber of people you have to play with!

    • George: I have tremendous respect for people who work with feet. I mean, to dedicate yourself to the foot… You're toiling in virtual anonymity.

    • George: I'm gonna need some water here!

    • Elaine: Maybe I'll go visit my mother. She just bought me some new panties and they're all…laid out for me.

    • George: Time is what he's indicating here.

    • Jerry: So, she's taking about her panties, so, uh...so, I said, "You mean the panties your mother laid out for you?"
George: "The panties your mother laid out for you"? What does that mean?
Jerry: I don't know! It just popped out.
George: Well, how did she react?
Jerry: She flipped out! Just left.
George: Well, that's not offensive. It's abnormal, but it's not offensive.

  • NOTES (1)

    • Warren Frost and Grace Zabriskie both appeared on David Lynch and Mark Frost's series Twin Peaks. Another Twin Peaks cast member joins Grace and Warren in an appearance in "The Rye".

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Susan: He's doing an impression of Johnny Carson, Daddy
Johnny Carson is the former host of the Tonight Show, from 1962 - 1992, right before Jay Leno took over. Sadly, he passed away on January 23, 2005 at the age of 79.
