  • The Mango

    9.0
One of the most memorable, and a very quotable episode, to kick off the fifth season of Seinfeld. While this show has dipped into sexual encounters before, it is always professional and safe for TV in how it handles itself (remember master of my domain?) and tonight was no different as they talked about "below the equator."

The scenes with Kramer, Jerry and Joe at the fruit stand may have been the best though. As someone who enjoys fruit, I found Kramer's radical passion for it to be quite humorous and it was great to see the overbearing neighbor with a different interest for a change.moreless
  • A nice episode.

    9.0
I thought that this was a good episode of Seinfeld. In fact it was actually great. I have to admit that the entire plot around the mango was quite clever and it played out better than I thought it would. It connected the entire four cast memebers and it made for some funny bits here and there. My favorite aspect was when Jerry was shopping at the fruit stand and was banned by Joe. The fruit looked really good, but I don't understand why the guy was so touchy. It's just fruit and he lost some business. It was quite funny. Thank you.moreless

In another great installment, George (and later Jerry) runs into some trouble below the equator, and Kramer gets banned from his favorite fruit store. During a conversation Jerry finds out Elaine faked it during their relationship, lending to some of the best dialogue the show has to offer. When Jerry tries to buy Kramer some fruit, he also gets banned. When George is experiencing his trouble, he tries a piece of mango from Kramer. Later, when after nearly ending their friendship from new unearthed information, Jerry runs into the same problem as George. It's an all around great episode.moreless
  • Often overlooked masterpiece that has some of the funniest lines ever written in a 1/2 hour sitcom.

    10
George claims his glasses were stolen and walks into Jerry\\\'s with prescription googles, claims he broke his spare set playing basketball; Jerry tells Elaine,\\\'he was running from a bee.\\\" And so it goes, Elaine gets bit by a strange dog but the ER dr does not give her a shot. Kramer and George try to get a discount at the optometrist only to have Elaine \\\'develop\\\' symptoms of rabies. Homage to the \\\"The Great Escape\\\", hysterical lines about George being able to see 20/20 if he just squints and a terrific Elaine and Kramer dialogue on rabies symptoms, including Elaine calling Kramer, I think for the first time, \\\'a Hipster Dufus.\\\'

And of course, this is the episidoe where Kramer gets Jerry an air conditioner (a Commander 8) wholesale: \\\"retail is for suckers\\\' he says.

Classic and among the very best written.moreless
  • One of my favorite season 5 episode!

    9.2
I think that this episode is one of the best episodes of Season 5. Jerry discovers that Elaine fake orgasms when they were dating and is trying to give it another shot in order to prove that he can do so much better, Elaine does not hear this and decides to leave Jerry in desperation for doing this. George worries about if his new girlfriend is faking or not hers so he panicks and loses his touch. Kramer begins buying fruit in the supermarket, but after trying to change a bad fruit for another he gets ban and tries to get Jerry to buy his fruit, he also gets caught and both of them are ban. When George buys the fruit for them and eats a mango he discovers that he has return and goes out where his girlfriend. Elaine and Jerry decide to have a sex to save the friendship, but Elaine continues unimpressed and by the end of the episode, Jerry fails in his attempt, which really make me cry of laughter. The Mango episode is great.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (10)

    • Joe bans Kramer from his store for trying to return a bad piece of fruit. However, in Season 2's "The Ex-Girlfriend," Kramer told Jerry that Joe accepts returns on bad fruit.

    • "La Boîte en Bois", the name of the restaurant George and Karen go to, means "The Wooden Box" in English.

    • If you pause and look at the tapes on Jerry's shelf when Elaine comes to return Jerry's things, the titles of the tapes are:The TtG, Love Chain, Amnesia, Boxing, Gunfight, Lipstick

    • The sign on the wall in Joe's Fruit Shop reads, "Prices subject to change according to customer's attitude."

    • just a comment-yes in this episode, a blue and silver Cannondale is hanging in the hallway-usually, there is a green Klein bike is there.

    • At one point, in a discussion of giving a woman an orgasm, Jerry says that no one really knows how to do it. However, in "The Fusilli Jerry", he has a detailed sequence of moves that he says has never failed him.

    • In this episode, Kramer says that he only carries hundred dollar bills, but in "The Reverse Peephole" he considers a five dollar bill a large bill.

    • Later, in "The Dinner Party", Kramer tells George that he never carries any cash at all. Instead, George has the hundred dollar bill.

    • When Jerry begs Elaine for "another shot," she refuses, on the ground that it would ruin the friendship. However, in episode 14 ("The Deal") they had already had another shot, and it clearly hadn't ruined the friendship.

    • A silver and blue Cannondale is hanging on the wall in Jerry's apartment. I know this silver and blue bike appears in other episodes, too, I just don't remember exactly what these other episodes are. In most episodes a green bike is hanging on the wall.

  • QUOTES (17)

    • Kramer: (admiring Elaine's ability to fake it) You know, I heard her screaming from my apartment. She woke me up a few times.

    • Jerry: Nobody knows what to do. You just close your eyes, you hope for the best. I really think they're happy if you just make an effort.

    • George: I think I'll have a chocolate malted here!

    • George: You're very good. Very good with the moanings and the gyrations. You really had me going there for a minute.
Karen: You think I was faking?
George: Come on: 'Oh George, oh Geeeooorge!' Come on! Not that I don't appreciate the effort that was put into it.

    • George: I don't want any mango.
Kramer: Come on, take some. It's good.
      (George tries a piece)
George: Very good. Juicy. Ripe. This Joe's got some terrific fruit.
      (George looks a little weird)
      Jerry: What?
George: I feel like I got a B12 shot. This is like a taste explosion!
      Kramer: I told you.
      (George stands still)
      Jerry: What is it?
George: I think it moved. Oh my god, I think it moved. Yeah, give me the big piece. I'll see you later.
      (Elaine enters the apartment)
      Elaine: Hi George.
George: I'm back, baby, I'm back!

    • Joe: Whaddaya want me to do?
      Kramer: I want restitution
Joe: Oh, you want restitution? How about this? You're banned!
      Kramer: You're banning me?
      Joe: That's right! Banned!
Kramer: But what am I going to do for fruit?!

    • Jerry: How did she do it? She's like Meryl Streep this woman. And I know how to work the equipment. I'm not unskilled, I'm in the union.

    • Kramer: So she faked 'em, so what?
Jerry: The woman had an orgasm under false pretenses…that's sexual perjury!

    • George: She gave me the hook.
      Jerry: You got the hook?
George: It's like the manager coming out to ask you for the ball.

    • Elaine: What about our friendship?
      Jerry: Oh friendship. Friendship schmiendship.

    • Jerry: What about the panting, the moaning, the groaning, the screaming?
      Elaine: Fake, fake, fake, fake.

    • George: That reminds me you owe $47.50 for the fruit.
Jerry: I don't have any cash.
      Kramer: I've only got hundreds.

    • George: Well if Houdini couldn't do it, what chance do I have?!?

    • Jerry: What, are you upset now?
Elaine: Yes, I'm upset! Can't you tell?
      Jerry: No, maybe you're faking.

    • Elaine: Jerry, we have to have sex to save the friendship.
Jerry: Sex...to save the friendship? Well, if we have to we have to.

    • Jerry: Oh that Meryl Streep, she's such a phoney-baloney.

    • Kramer: The supermarket! That's impossible, they don't have a decent piece of fruit at the supermarket. The apples are mealy, the oranges are dry, I don't know what's going on with the papayas!

  • NOTES (4)

    • This episode won the 1995 WGA Award (TV) for Episodic Comedy. This episode was nominated for the 1994 DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Comedy Series. This episode was nominated for the 1994 Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Directing in a Comedy Series.

    • For the first four seasons, Jerry had an electric stove. Beginning this season, he has a gas range. In this episode, Kramer lights a cigar off the stove, so the switch might have been made simply to accommodate that scene.

It is also possible that the stove was changed for reasons of product placement. In Season 5, with the popularity of the show, we begin to see familiar products prominently displayed. Kramer lighting the cigar may simply have been to draw attention to the fact that Jerry's stove is gas.

    • The way George says "Im back, baby" is the same way his father says it in "The Fatigues" after he tries his wife's eggs

    • The co-writing credit for the teleplay that was credited to Buck Dancer, is changed to Larry David in the syndicated reruns. Larry must have decided to use a pseudonym for the original broadcast. Buck is also the first name George would use if he was a porn star, the full name being Buck Naked.
