Season 5 Episode 2

The Puffy Shirt

Aired Thursday 9:00 PM Sep 23, 1993 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • When the low-talker pushed George towards the iron board the face of the iron is a dark colour. However, when George is holding the iron and screaming the face of the iron is silver.

    • Jerry says that his dad has "never thrown anything out. Ever". But we see him throw a wallet in the bin back in "The Watch".

    • When the gang see a couple of homeless guys using the puffy shirts, you can hear a woman from the audience (between the laughs) screaming "Oh my god!".

    • George says to Kramer that Jerry doesn't even let anyone use his bathroom; however, George uses Jerry's bathroom in many episodes.

    • George tells the modeling executives that "he won a contest", alluding to Season 4's "The Contest". However, in that episode, it was never revealed who won.

    • There must have only been one puffy shirt made for this episode since not both of the homeless men in the final scene are wearing them. The man Jerry gives money to is, but the other one is only wearing a loose-fitting collarless shirt of some kind.

    • A mini-sized replica of the puffy shirt was included as an extra in the 'Seinfeld Seasons 5&6 DVD gift set', released in November 2005.

    • The same silver and blue Cannondale that is seen in this season's previous episode, The Mango, is hanging on the wall in Jerry's apartment. This silver and blue bike might appear in other episodes this season. In most episodes a green Klein bike is hanging on the wall. I know in episode 7 this season, The Non-Fat Yogurt, the green Klein bike is in Jerry's apartment. I suppose at the beginning of this season the green bike was not available for some reason.

  • Quotes

    • Estelle: I think you're all a little touched in the head.

    • Kramer: (admiring George's hands) Oh, those are nice. Ya know, I never noticed this before. They're smooth, creamy, delicate, yet masculine.

    • Jerry: (to George's mom) I don't know if I feel comfortable handing out baloney sandwiches in the building.

    • Estelle: Georgie, would you like some Jell-O?
Frank: Why'd you put the bananas in there?
      Estelle: George likes the bananas!

    • Elaine: (to Jerry) You're all puffed up! You look like the Count of Monte Cristo!

    • Client: I only hope you have a little more self-control.
George: You don't have to worry about me. I won a contest.

    • Kramer: I just can't be with someone whose life is in complete disarray.

    • George: My whole life was ruined because of the puffy shirt.

    • George: Stress is very damaging to the epidermis.

    • George: Borrowing money from a friend is like having sex. It just completely changes the relationship.

    • Homeless Guy #1: (wearing the Puffy Shirt) Can you spare a little change for an old buccaneer?

    • George: Have you completely lost your mind? Who's dressing you? You look like a complete idiot!

    • Kramer: This pirate trend that she's come up with, Jerry -- this is gonna be the new look for the 90's. You're gonna be the first pirate!
Jerry: But, I don't wanna to be a pirate!

  • Notes

    • This is the first official appearence of Jerry Stiller as Frank Costanza.

    • Two months after this episode was aired, The Nanny in the episode "The Nuchschlep" featured both Fran and Maggie wearing the puffy shirt.

    • The "Puffy Shirt" would later appear as part of Niles's pirate costume in the Frasier episode, "A Midwinter Night's Dream".

    • The Today Show interview segment was videotaped rather then filmed in order to imitate the live morning show's look.

    • For his performance in this episode Jerry Seinfeld received a 1994 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Larry David also received an Emmy nomination in 1994 for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing in a Comedy Series.

    • The Puffy Shirt worn in this episode was placed in the Smithsonian in 2004.

    • Rare episode in which a scene doesn't take place at Monk's Coffee Shop. They are many episodes without Monk's, but most of those do not take place in New York City("The Hamptons", "The Trip", "The Parking Garage" for example). There are 2 scene in a different restaurant instead: the scene where George is with his parents, and the last scene after George burned his hands on the iron in Jerry's dressing room.

    • This episode marks the beginning of three related quotes. In this episode, Jerry says "But I don't wanna be a pirate!" Then, in 607 The Mom & Pop Store, Jerry says "But I don't wanna be a cowboy!" A few episdoes later, in 613 The Scofflaw, Kramer says "I wanna be a pirate!"
