Selling Hitler was a British miniseries based on the hoax surrounding the purported discovery and sale of Hitler's diaries. It was based on the book, Selling Hitler: The Story of the Hitler Diaries, written by Robert Harris. In the miniseries, Jonathan Pryce portrays Gerd Heidemann, a journalist with the German magazine Stern who believes he has been offered the actual diaries of Adolf Hitler. As it turns out, the diaries were forged by a criminal named Konrad Kujau. Over ten million German marks was ultimately paid to Kujau and the diaries were even authenticated by noted document experts before it was revealed that they were fake. In addition to Pryce, the miniseries starred Alexei Sayle as Konrad Kujau, Tom Baker as Manfred Fischer, Peter Capaldi as Thomas Walde, Alan Bennet as Hugh Trevor-Roper and Barry Humphries as Rupert Murdock. The miniseries was hailed by critics upon its original release and ultimately put out on DVD in July of 2010.
