Serial Experiments Lain

Season 1 Episode 13

Ego: Layer 13

Aired Unknown Feb 08, 2003 on techtv

  • Trivia

    • Goof: Mispronuntion of 'Ego':
In the title sequence, the Whisper voice pronounces "Ego" incorrectly. The 'e' should be pronounced long, as in 'Ee-goh'. Whisper, however, pronounces it as a short 'e', thus sounding like 'Eh-goh'.

    • Halfway through the episode most of the original introduction is shown, without the 'Present Day, Present Time' titles.

    • Before the opening credits roll, Lain speaks directly to the viewer

  • Quotes

    • Lain's Soliloquy:
...OK, let's see... I guess that I'm confused again. Am I here, or am I there? I don't know. Over there, I'm everywhere. I know that. But here is connected to over there. Is that right? But then, where is the real me after all is said and done. Oh! There is no real me. I guess that's it. I only exist inside those people aware of my existence. But what about this me that I can hear talking right here and now? It's me, isn't it?
      (Static appears in transmission)
This me that's talking. Who is it? Who's me?
      (Transmission is cut off)

    • City References:
When "Lain of the Real" and "Lain of the Wired" are talking in the "lonely city", a tower with the number 109 adorning it is displayed. This is actually the 109 Building in the Shibuya Ward of Tokyo. Known for its large department stores, Shibuya is centered on the 109 building, which is owned by the Tokyu Railway Company and houses one of the largest department stores in Shibuya. In Japanese, "to" (in this instance) means 10 and "kyu" means 9, hence the number on the building.

A moment later, a sign is also displayed for the train stop (JR Station) for the area. The kanji shown on the sign stand for Shibuya.
