This episode is one of the most important episodes of the series. Carrie has the photo session for her column advertisement, which will be displayed on the side of a bus. Also, Big and Carrie go on a first date, and they unexpectedly have sex. Carrie writes a column about people who have sex with people they do not introduce to their friends. Charlotte reveals that she slept with one of God's chosen people, which is a very weird storyline, but still entertaining. Miranda notices her boyfriend's spanking fetish. Samantha was hilarious. "Nobody in New York notices a bus until it's about to hit them." Priceless! This episode is definitely a series classic.moreless
  • The naked dress.

    7.8
I think is the real start of Carrie and Big's relationship. Their first "date", then actual first date also their first time together spurred on by the naked dress. Actually I liked Carrie's naked shirt with sparkles that she writes in later in the episode alot more than the naked dress.

Loved Charlotte's little blurblet with the Hasidic Jew and the fact that Samantha doesn't have any secret sex, just sex.

I think this episode is good because there are the people who keep their secret sex people away from everyone they know and there are the people who are the secret and I felt like this did a good job of showing both sides of this particular relationship. Poor Carrie - her ad got screwed up before it even began running around. how mortifing.moreless

When Mr. Big doesn't show up to see the maiden voyage of her promotional poster on the side of a bus, Carrie suspects she is only his secret lover, and confronts him - I really liked Chris Noths involvement with this show as I think that him and Carrie have a really good on screen connection. The fact that Carrie and him arent really together actully strenthens the show because it makes every time they are on camera together that much better and more exciting. The whole bus poster thing was a random storyline, though the picture when the bus went by was really comical.moreless
  • A nice episode pointing out various aspects of 'secret sex'-relations very well; 'secret sex' meaning, that one partner can't reveal the person he/she is dating to the public out of shame/embarrassement.moreless

    7.3
Not everyone we meet in our lives is someone we want to introduce to our friends, let alone if we're having sex with them. Some people - that's probably what everyone thinks from time to time - will perhaps embarrass us in front of our friends, so we prefer to keep them a secret. The part of this episode, that's about this 'secret sex' is very believable and well written, climaxing in Carrie confronting Mr. Big about her feeling like a possible 'secret sex'-partner.

It's fun but one odd thing bugs me out: Miranda meets a nice man, connects well with him, stays alone in his appartement, reveals a fetish of his by going through his stuff and then confronts him about it the second they meet after he returns in the evening? How stupid is that? That event just doesn't fit Mirandas character if You ask me.

Average meaning a fine episode - go watch it and enjoy :-)moreless

    • When Carrie and Samantha put up the poster on the wall of Carrie's apartment all four tacks are in but in the next shot one tack is missing but it returns however in the following shot.

  • QUOTES (10)

    • Samantha (to Carrie after her bus ad went by and someone drew a penis next to her mouth on the ad): Don't worry, sweetie, don't worry! Nobody in New York notices a bus until it's about to hit them!

    • Charlotte: So we would talk about art and sex and the Torah.
Carrie: Well, why didn't you introduce him to anybody?
Charlotte: I was embarrassed! I mean, I couldn't really date him, and he couldn't date me. I mean, what would people think?
Samantha: Well, if the sex was good who cares what anybody thinks?

    • Samantha: There's no such thing as bad publicity.
Carrie: Yeah you would say that, you're a publicist.

    • Samantha: Have I ever had fabulous sex with someone that I didn't want to admit to? Hmm. Did I ever tell you about that jazz musician who lived with his mother in Queens?
      Carrie: Yeah, Alex.
Samantha: What about the window washer?
Carrie: The one who doesn't wear any underwear?
Samantha: I met this gorgerous kid in Spy Bar last year. He was....
Carrie: He turned out to be in high school. (voiceover) Evidently, Samantha had had lots of sex, none of which was secret.
Samantha: Fine. It just proves that I'm not ashamed of anyone whom I've slept with.

    • Miranda: (The man Miranda had just met at the gym asked her out) Nah, it's too quick. I think maybe that kick in his head scrambled his brains.
Carrie: No. Too quick is sleeping with him on the first date. That's too quick.
Miranda: You both got excited, and you went for it. Stop blaming yourself.
Carrie: Oh, I don't blame myself. I blame the dress. The dress!

    • Mr. Big: Interesting dress.
      Carrie: Meaning.
      Mr. Big: Interesting dresss.

    • Miranda: True romance cannot exist without good sex.
Samantha: And yet you can have good sex with someone you don't like or respect...or even remember.

    • Carrie (after having sex on the first date with Mr. Big): I will not be the first one to speak. And if he never calls me again, I'll always think of him fondly, as an asshole.

    • (Before Carrie goes on her first offical date with Mr. Big, she's showing the girls what she's wearing)
Samantha: Hey honey, it's fabulous. Bravo!
Miranda: It's tits on toast, baby. But you make it work.
Charlotte: Well, let's just say it. It's the 'naked dress'. I mean, you're obviously going to have sex with him tonight.
Carrie: Come on, it's our first date.
Miranda: She's not gonna have sex. She's just gonna look like sex.
Carrie: That's right. I'm just the trailer.
Samantha: Please. If it happens, it happens. Bottoms up!
Charlotte: Wait a second, I thought you were serious about this guy, you can't sleep with him on the first date.
      Samantha: Oh God!
Miranda: Here she goes again with 'The Rules.'
Samantha: The women who wrote that book they wrote it because they couldn't get laid, so they constructed this whole bullshit theory to make women who can get laid feel bad.

    • Miranda: Just don't fuck on a first date, you're fine.
      Carrie: Third date.
      Charlotte: Too soon!
Samantha: Reality check. A guy can just as easily dump you if you fuck him on the first date as he can if you wait until the tenth.
Miranda: When have you ever been on a tenth date?
Charlotte: And by then at least you're emotionally involved.
Samantha: Exactly. I mean, isn't it better to find out if the sex is good right off the bat, before anybody's feelings get hurt?
