  • Back to the beginning...

This episode, marked by a flashback, goes back to the beginning - before Shaka's birth - and describes how the young Shaka came to be. A significant portion is spent on the courtship and tempestuous relationship between his mother and the then (in 1786) King of the Zulus, greatly highlighting the King's flippancy and arrogance (which was well portrayed by Conrad Magwaza).

Due to a myriad of circumstances involving the out-of-wedlock birth of Shaka and the cultural taboo surrounding their relationship, the setup for Shaka's bitterness is now complete as his mother, sister, and he are ostracized over the years.

It was truly sad to see what drives someone to such lengths of vengence and this episode clearly develops not only the circumstances, but also includes other outside influences that impact the young Shaka and his life choices, including the cultural and spiritual overlays.

A good start to heart-breaking chapter in the life of this historic figure.
